A fire on the beach just below
the city limits night before last des
troyed a building near the oil works
which has been used as a mess house.
The fire was'accidental.
The steamship California arrived
from Sitka yesterday. She has made
an excellent trip, and accounts on this
voyage for some of the time lost by
the bad weather of November and
December.
J. R. HcClerkhi'of Grays river
brought in a fine lot of beaver skins
yesterday, and one white mink skin.
This is the first white mink pelt we
have ever seen. It makes a beautiful
-fur.
The 'Oregonian of yesterday in
vforms its readers that the steamship
Geo. W. Elder sailed from San Fran
cisco for Portland on the 18th. The
"steamers ot this line usually beat the
dispatches from two to four days.
A sailor row occurred on board
the Strathern coming down the river
yesterday. Pilot Johnson called f jr
a policeman to stop the men from going
ashore, but they didn't seem to want
to go badly when the ship -struck the
dock.
Mr. F. S. Bates write&--to his at
torneys in this city from -fit Helens,
Messrs. Robb & Fulton, that he had
been tried on the ''charged preferred
against him, and honorably acquitted.

Change of Schedule.
Mr. L. A. Loomis called upon us
yesterday, en route to Portland Tor
six months past the people -along the
line have been endeavoring to get a
change of schedule en the Olympia
route, via Oysterville and Chehalis
from this city. Mr. -Loomis lias re
received instructions, as contractor
over that rtute, to ctf?ry the mail on
the following schedule:

This schedule will give perfect satis
faction. It is the same as was the
schedule on that route previous to the
last letting of the contract, and as it
has taken six months to get -it cor
rected from the errors made at the
last publication of biddings, we hope
that clerks in the Poet-oflice depart
ment at Washington will use a little
more care in future, avoiding mistakes
of this kind. The clerk who sends
these instrnctions to Mr. Loomis has
placed the matter right, but the clerk
who sent what w;is supposed to be a
duplicate to the ostmasters at Astoria
and Oysterviile has made a stupid
blunder by writing the word Thursday
where-lie should have written the word
Wednesday, and vice versa, but as our
postmasters are disposed to carry out
the sjririt of their instructions, they
will not necessarily be compelled to
carry out the letter because of a blun
der in Washington. Judge Briscoe,
of Oysterville, has also received in
structions to'Jrt the mail carrier have
the mail whenever needed to assure
dispatch in this direction, as it often
occurs that the schedule time cannot
be made along the beach at high tide.
We congratulate the people of Pacific
county on these rectified errors of the
past. .
The cash basis has been adopted'
by B. Hamburger. See new ads to
day. Cash is the only correct jrrinci-
I pie of trade. "No trust, no bust, no
hell;" should be the motto of more
men than Dr. Mary Walker and Hen
Reward Beecher. We applaud Mr.
Hamburger's resolution.
There are eome rough characters
about Astoria, "One of whom, who
has been spotted ;is a bad man for
some time past by different persons,
was sent up under the vagrant law
yesterday, much to the relief of Mr.
Nic. Wyman, who begins to believe
that he has nourished a viper. :
' 'There is one crib less at -&s-
toria," said a passer by on Chenamus
street ' yesterday. Our reporter fol
lowed the fellow, and ascertained that
he referred to the -ballast hopper at
the Farmers' dock, nd that was the
only legitimate loakilitem which he
picked up all day long. Oh, how
we 04ke return of ithose happy days
of '77 in Astoria.
The British barkHannah Landles,
now loading at the Earmers warehouse
in this city, is a new vessel as well as
one of the handsomest vessels afloat.
This -is her second cargo since her
launch. She will carry 2000 long
tons of wheat on nineteen feet draft.
Capt. Gregg is justly.proud of her, as
she was built under his supervision
from the laying of her keel.
The Dallas Itemizer dishes up a
dish" for traveling humbugs. It says:
"We have had enough of the peripa
tetic dead-beats who infest the small
towns of the state, and Mvisli to in
form the fraternity that hereafter their
requestsfir notices, etc., will not re
ceive any attention at our hands, un
less coin accompanies their order,
Frank Wilton and Mart. Taylor in
cluded." J
"Oregon" was mentioned in the
house of representatives on the 20th.
The way it come about was this: They
were discussin' the cypher business,
and the resolution recites "that cer
tain alleged telegrams in cipher have
been publised, indicating that attempts
were made after the presidential elec
tion of 1870 to influence, b' money or
other fraudulent methods, the vote of
electors or the action of canvassing
officers, in the states- of Florida, South
Carolina .and Oregon.
Freights and Charters.
With eight exceptions every vessel
'in the port of Astoria (and the rivers
also), is chartered. Some are load
ing and some waiting for cargo. Only
a few are on demurrage. It is esti
mated that there is a sufficiency of
tonnage in port to carry off the
entire surplus for export. Persons
who have the best means of knowing
say there are less than 40,000 tons
available for shipment at this time,
probably not more than 33,000 to
35,000 tons. Our list shows twenty
grain vessels on the way to this port
our report is as accurate as any
that can be made, from records of the
leading commercial "journals of the
universe, but we are free to admit
that we do not believe that seven of
that number of vessels are now ac
tually headed in this direction. If to
the three vessels .coming from 2ew
York and Philadelphia there be add
ed four from other ports all together,
it will be aboutrigh. The season is
practically closed, and our grain shipments-have
fallen off fully 25 per
cent from last season. This is partly
owing to the home demands for wheat
for seed in newly opened localities, j
and partly to diminished crops in the
Wallamet valley.
There is a prospect of the coasting
vessels coining back into their old
channels, from which they have been
driven by the presence of so Jare
an increase in the steam fleet. Mr.
G. W. Hume's fine schooner Hera,
one of the best carriers afloat, we
don't care where you go to find it, is
on the berth in San JFrancisco for
Astoria. She is under charter.to.load
here for Australia, or Honolulu

the Knappton mills, arrived in the

plaint about the round about way in

surdly framed that, in order to comply
with the requirements, a-money-order
issued from the Victoria post office, ,
and made payable at any point on the
Uound must pass through the office at
Portland, beforcreaehing its destina
tion. -
....Mr. G. Neimeyer, the prince of
merchant tailors in Oregon, arrived at
Astoria yesterday, and will Iremai for
a few days to take orders for suits of
