Omaha, Jan. 19. John G. Comp-
ton, ex-postmaster of Columbus, Ne
braska, lias Been sentenced to ten
years imprisonment for the robbery of
four registered money letters.
"Richmond, Jan. 18. The steamer
Wyandke forced a passage through
the ice gorge 'fc 11 o'clock to day,
occupying over; three days. A short
gorge near Yernia, has been broken
up by the steamer Wyandke and Old
Dominion, working from each end.
The ice at that p"oint was twelve feet
thick.
New York, Jan 13. Mills & Co.,
said to be brokers for Jay Gould and
other well known operators, have sus
pended. The Northwestern advanced
too rapidly for the bears.
Jacksonville, Fla, Jan. IS. Gov.
Hull has been indicted by the United
States grand jury on a charge of con
8piracy with others in obtaining false
returns of elections in Brevard coun
ty. Hull was a democratic candidate
for congress at the late election, from
the 2d district, and holds a certificate
of election from the governor.
New York, Jan. 18. The lire last
night in Worth and Thomas streets
destroyed three buildings. The loss
approximates two and a half millions.
The fire will cause the suspension of
six dr e'glit small insurance companies.
The block in which the tire occurred
was regarded as valuable as any sin
gle block in the city. One efTecif of
the fire is to advance the rate of insur
ance. The companies are getting an
advance without objection.
Washington, Jan. 18. Lincoln
hall was crowded last night to hear
Chief Joseph and other indians speak
for the rights and liberties of their
race.
IMpIitlieria a Contagion.
Tho theory is fast gaining ground,
amonx physicians in the east and south,
that diphtheria is as contagious a dis
ease as the measles or small-pox, and
that persons so attacked, and the bod
ies of those who have died of it
should be treated with the utmost
precaution towards preventing the dis
semination of the deadly germs. The
precautions which are recommended
have special reference to the safety of
children. Numbers of cases are re
ported where infants, taken into a
room where death has occurred from
diphtheria, have died of the same dis
ease immediately after such exposure.

Walla, 18. Aps, the remaining in
dian who was convicted of complicity
in the murder of whites last summer,
was hanged here to-day. The same
precautions were taken to prevent any
trouble. A number of whites and
indians attended the execution. Sev
eral prominent indians addressed the
whites and indians, assuring them of
peace in the future.
San Francisco, Jan. 18. The Lon
don and San Francisco bank has re
ceived a telegram from its London
correspondent, announcing that Law
rence 0. Hall, its abscounding clerk,
who got away with about $40,000 of
money, was arrested on the bteamer
Oceanic. From telegrams received by
Capt. Lees, it appears that Hall ivas
arrested at Hongkong, but cannptbe,
'extradited, as larceny is not included,
in our treaty with Great Britain.
George W. Abbott, a young broker,
who ran away to Mexico with $40,000
in currency entrusted to him by tho
Anglo Calif oniian bank to buy silver
with, was to-day in the municipal
court sentenced to three year3 in the
house of correction.

A new and improved mode of plant
ing telegraph poles has recently been

this city. The ground beeing staked
oft at a distance about 200 feet apart,
a man starts off with a pocketful of
four-ounce cartridges, containing the
wonderful new explosive known as
"electric powder," and, with a crow
bar in his hand, a hole is punched
from four to five feet with the bar
in a few minutes, and a cartridge
dropped to the bottom with a fuse and
lighted with a match. The operator
then walks to the next stake, before
reaching which a low, dull thud is
heard behind, a hole about the diam
eter of a ilour barrel has been blown
in the ground to the depth of four or
five feet, and the work is followed up
by a gang of men who plant the poles
in the holes thus made, fill in with
gravel and earih, and the job is com
llete. It matters not what soil is
perforated with the bar, wet or dry,
loam, clay, gravel, slate or bowlders
(provided the bar can be inserted) the
effect is the same. A gang of four
men, with polos delivered on the
ground one man to blast and three
to erect the pole3 and tamp them,
will put up from 100 to 150 poles a
day. The cost, therefore, of
this new and improved process
is about two-thirds less than
the ordinary method of planting tele
graph poles, as now practiced.
