How to Apply Water to. Fire.
An old fireman of Maine gives th.o
following to one of the papers of that
State: One gallon of water at the bot
tom of a fire will do more good to,
luench. it than ten gallons at the top.
Play low is the true motto for the fire
man. If the first engine that reached,
the Summer street fire in Boston, had
burst into the warehouse and played
into the goods elevator where the fire
broke out, it would probably have
saved fifty millions of dollars. To play
on the roof of a house on fire is to
waste wTater; the roof ?as made to
ehed water; the rain does not put out
the kitchen fire, nor would the river,
flowing bodily on the roof put out the
kitchen fire. Play low, get the water
to the fire, and you need not pour out
the river. A few gallons at the bottom
of a fire will rise in clouds of steam
when the lire is rising, and will quench
it. Even a heap of rubbish turns rain
and water like a partial roof. A gill
of water thrown into the bottom of a
grate equals a quart thrown on top,
For a similar reason water on the
windward side is more effective than,
vn the leeward. I am speaking now
of a moderate fire, when there are only
one or two houses burning. The big
blaze on the leeward looks fearful, but
they cannot be effected by playing on
them. Throw your water into the bed
of coals under the retort that is suck
ing them and it will go out; that is to
say, play at the bottom of the wind
ward side of the fire, and you take the
surest and speediest way to quench
the whole, leeward side blazes in

Inland Empire.
Notwithstanding the immense
amount of building done in this city
during the past year, there seems to
be no flagging in the good work, in
spite of all the cold weather. K. B.
Sinnott, of the Umatilla house, is hav
ing his residence transformed into, &
two-story house, from a story and a,
half. The Moabus house on Second
street, which will contain twenty ele
gant sleeping apartments, will be com
pleted about the first of March. Ben
Korten is putting up a saddlery store
on Fourth street for Bloc; & Depuis.
Parties from below comtemplate erect
ing a hotel between our office and that
of the Mountaineer, to be three stories
high and covering a ground surface of
100 feet by 30. Also we loarn that as
soon as Handley & Sinnott's lease of
the Empire hotel expires, the old and
popular landlord Thomas Smith will
return here and tear it down to make
room for a new and elegant hotel
building. Good mechanics will find
plenty of work here, during the com
ing season.
As the times are hard in
Europe, it is probable immigration
to the United States during the
next few years will be larger than
usual. Our home markets have
become so important that many
manufacturers in Europe are in
clined to remove to the United
States and establish themselves
here. There seems no doubt now
that we are about to enter upon a
prosperous era, which Oregon will
also enjoy as soon as we can put a
jstop to the Chinese plague.
The Peoples' protective transpor
tation company have sold their steam
ers S. T. Church and McMinnville to
the Willamette locks and transporta
tion company, and are now closing up
their affairs.
;?5&The free lands of the west arc
heiug taken up and settled this year to a
degree most gratifying, in the face of
the over-crowded mechanical depart
ments of metropolitan life. Several mil
lions more acres of homesteads have
been entered for settlement at the var
ious land offices this year than in 1876
and 1877, and still the western movement
continues in force, And this is the only
solution of the labor troubles. Let the
unemployed come and bsaomelprouucers
instead' of consumers.
