Young Mr. Fairftwl is again in the city preparing to load the llannah Landless. The register at the Occident shows a very apparent increase m travel the .past few days. Preparations of all kinds for fish ing are being conducted on a large scale for next season. Regular weekly prayer meeting will be held at the First "Baptist-ehurch this (Thursday) evening. Mr. J. F. Warren, fui-mcrly with Lndd & Tilton, has associated himself withmith Bros. In the iron and brass woks. The Allegiance started up at 8 o'clock a. :. yesterday, in tow of the Wonder. She had 12 hours to save her charter. Col. E. C. Merriman, of the 13th Ijght-house district office at Portland, was thawed out sufficient to visit Astoria yesterday. -- The Hannah Lundles is coming back to Astoria from Poland m ballast, and will load here for Europe with Walla Walla wheat. Mr. H. Ach, one-of the youngest of Portland's attorneys, is in Astoria pre paring for some legal business before the approaching circuit court. A severe hail storm visited this locality at 2 o'clock a. m. yesterday. The hail remained on the ground all day, and was augmented by enow about noon. Capt. Morris, vtfio has been -con-lined to his room by sickness, at the Occident, since his arrival m Oregon, is gradually recovering under the care ful treatment of Dr. Baker. M. P. Callender, -esq., superin tendent of the Knappton Milling com pany, and the senior in the firm of the Oregon Packing company, at Clifton, Mr. J. W. Cook, were in the city yes terday. Mr. J. S. Chambers breathed his last, and closed his eyes in death, after long and painful suffering, at G o'clock yesterday morning. The funeral will take place to-day at 2 o'clock p. m. -- The Oregon City Enterprise tells of a young man in Clackamas county, who was to have been married Christ mas day and got his license ready 4mt the mother of the bride, that was to be, run him off the premises and the wedding did not take place. What a mother-in-law she would have made! "What an escape he had. The Seattle Post -of January Alth, was informed that the Oregon tSteam Navigation company were hastily fitting up a boat to navigate the Co lumbia river in its than icy condition. The immense weight of floatiug ice rendered the passage of ordinary river 'steamers impossible. The word then was that the weather at Portland -was freezing cold; no indications of a thaw. 'The steamship Oregon was caught .in tbe ice, and was still hold. The XonScst Way Bound. Burim the freeze up on the Colum bia river The Astorian -was aeuverea toTtoseburg, Jacksonville, Salem, etc., via San Francisco and Redding. To Walla Walla, Lewiston, etc., via San F&ncisco, Winnenmcca, Silver city, Boise, etc. This was a long ways around, but it was the best that could be done, and proves that As toria was not entirely shut out from the world at large. The Postmaster in San Francisco was instructed to Ronrl nil the western Washingten: mails by the Pacific Mail Steamship compunys steamers. The Alaska took all the mail from the Seattle post office for points in Oregon, California, and other parts of the southern and eastern world, it being impossible to tret letters and papers to such pointsi by anv other means of conveyance, owing to the freezing up of the Colum bia. It was the first mail in nearly twenty years to go out of -Seattle by ocean steamship. In early days the 1 only mail from Oregon and California to Seattle etc., was brought by the Pacific Mail company, the steamship 01 WlllCil 011 lllUir w.iy tu jiymuu4, called at both Portland -and Victoria, the vessels employed -being the old Northerner, Brother Jonathan, Paci fic, etc., that have long since gone to the bottom, taking down with them many hundreds of precious lives. Wallamet j-coule will think it a rather roundabout route for their mails from the Sound to take by way of Victoria, San Francisco, Sacramento, Itedding and lloseburg, says the Intelligencer, but this time it is the longest vay .round that was the surest way home. I) 3 -as! r an. s 5timaiia.y. Yesterday forenoon about ten about o'clock as a countryman of Hansons was driving Bergman & Berrys mare down to the city from upper-town the animal took more speed than she could carry around the angles in the roadway at its misconnection with Hem look street, and the wagon struck the roadway, carrying away about twenty five feet of the railing, and f lightning the otherwise sensible animal so badly that she increased her speed so much that at the next turn the wagon was capsized, and the occupants three men were thrown out, one of them striking the beach. The marc then speeded her course down to tho city leaving a piece of wagon here and there to mark her flight. The three men were all injured, Billy Coyle badly, John Berg man slightly, and the driver some. No fault can be attached to the mare, but that driver should never again be trustod with anv sort of an animal. Travels of a Registered Package. During the term of Mr. J. B. Under wood, as postal agent, some two years ago, says the Eugene City Guard, a registered package sent from Myrtle Creek, to Uerniansvillc, Oregon, was lost. Mr. Underwood went to the place, and ior several days investigated the affair, with the onh result that he was convinced of the integrity of the postmaster, Mr. Gabbett, at Myrtle Creek. No trace of the missing pack- i S - u- unuerwoou, a icw uays since, receiveo. a letter from Mr. Gabbett stating that he had received from the agent of the Posl oflice Department at Chicago, a receipt for the package; it having been found in a mail pouch sent -to Chicago for re pairs. Thus after a lapse of two years the missing matter came to light two thousand miles from its point of de parture and destination, and the good name of Mr. Gabbett is left cloudless and above suspicion. 'Carrying; Coals to Xewoastle" Is taking 'fish from llwaco to As toria. Why not can the fish where they are caught? Where water and fuel are plentiful; where a free land ing will be given in a 'convenient and suitable place, and where home indus try will be patronized. A cannery at llwaco could rely upon getting more fish and better fish than any other on the Columbia river, and at cheaper rates, as many of the upper canneries boats fish in this neighborhood and are oftentimes too late for the steamer that attend upon them, rather than sail their boats 12 or 15 miles up the river they would. dispose of their fish here at a discount, .as they often have dne- Ilwacd-Zepryk. Condition of Alaska. While in San Francisco recently, Major William Governetir Morris a special agent of the treasury depart ment, well known on the Sound, was interviewed by a reporter. He ex pressed himself in the most friendly manner towards that distant and ne lected territory. The steam mail service from Port Townsend to Sitka, he says, should be continued or to Kodiak. He doesn't like the Oliver Wolcott for service in Alaska waters. She was built for and is thoroughly adapted to the inland navigation of Puget Sound, but not for Alaska at all. He made one trip on her there, and never wants to make another. If she is made to do much northern duty a dreadful disaster will someday happen to her. The soldiers, he says, ruined the natives; leading xhe women into licentious excesses and teaching the men to manufacture hoochenoo. The latter is a vile, soul destroying com- pound, made of flour, sugar, molasses J and potatoes, all fermented and run through a common still made of coal oil cans. The use of this wretched stuff is more productive of misery and degradation than is our rot-gut whisky, the termination of a short indulgence in it -usually brings insanity and death. Major Morris differs widely with Spec ial Agent Elliot concerning Alaska, for Elliott, though he married an Aleut woman, seems hostile to every interest of the territory, and apparently knows of nothing in it of value but fur seal. The Major, on the conbrary, thinks Alaska a wonderful country, it being rich in minerals, a few of which are gold, -silver, copper, iron, platina and coal. Its timber resources .are inex haustible and extremely valuable, while its fisheries are beyond compari son with those of any other portion of the globe. As many as seven thousand salmon have been taken at a single Jiaul of the seine. The Yukon river he says is a large as the Amazon. We are sorry that our limited space will not permit us to further quote from the Special Agent's remarks on this occasion, as all that he there said was instructive and interesting, and well worth space in this and other leading journals of -the coast A Xujvsrct oT Gold. There is a world of sense embodied in this little rfngget of wisdom, which business men would do well to heed. The advertising man always has a per cent, over his unknown neighbors. To negative this assertion you must prove that the mass of the .people are unintelligent and do not take news papers and read them rather of a difficult matter 'to do. S-It is a faot-long since established, savs fhe Helena Herald, that the mer chant who liberally patronizes the ad vertising columns of the press, sells his wares cheaper than the one whose name is seldom or ever seen. The reason is patent for by thus advertising, his sales are trippled and a less proportionate profit makes him the greatest gainer. Some time ago the emperor of Eussia granted a charter to the university for women, and the Kussian minister of "war has now officially taken up the subject of training lad- doctors for army practice. This measure 'has been decided upon in consequence of the proof given in the iate war of the utter inabilifcy of the regular medical safT to cQpe with he enormous number of sick and wounded.
