Bismarck After Denmark.
After Prussia, with Austria, had
'overrun S'chleswig and Holst'eih,
-and forced the gallatit little kihg
'dom of Denihafk tb terrhs which
she 'could'nOldnger resist, a clause
in the treaty was etjuivalent to 'a
'pledge that the northef n or Danish
portion of Schleswig should be
'restored to Denmark after certain
preliminary arrangements should
have bh m'a'de. -That plart of the
treaty has been 'persistently viola
ted by the German government,
and no portidn of the territory re
turned. Ad last, after waiting for
a cause of Quarrel and a reason 'for
a continued r'etentibn of "thit ter
ritory, Bismarck has probably
"found it in the action of the Datt
ish court in giving an official re
ception to the Guelph deputation,
'which personated th'e Ifanoverian
address of loyalty "to -the Duke of
'Cumberland, heir'tc the late King
of Hanover whom Germany de
throned and Exilell. As the bride
'of the )uke, who should be King,
:7s the daughter of the Kin": of
Denmark, it would seem that the
'Danish court could not well refuse
Unofficial reception.
A telegram from Washington
informs us that the -ta'cinc ctfast
'lias eight "life-saving -stations."
How many of these are provided
"with bb'ats,,and how many hours
'would it tike to get the crew to
. geth'er and launch a boat at the
few stations that are equipped?
'The S. F. Com. Herald says:
The life-saving system of the Pa-
Goa4 is at present devoted' to
saving the lives of federal officers,
who would starve to death if their
salaries were withdrawn, anrl the'
were left face to face with work.
A Stormy Passage.
The British bark Highmoor, Capf.
Bailie, arrived at San Francisco on
Friday last, 100 days from Banjie
wangoe, Java. The log shows that
the vessel encountered considerable
.stormy weather in crossing the Pacific,
and sustained considerable damage on
Hhe 14th of December. In sending
' down the foretopgallant yard, the yard
rope gave way, caused by -a sudden
lurch, and falling on deck, jammed
the captain against the house, break
ing his right leg above the ankle and
' dislocating the right foot. The limb
was set as well as possible. The foot
remains dislocated. The captain is
-doing well, but is confined to his room.
Mr. A. It. Shipley who has boon
on a mission to the states beyond the
Itocky mountains in connection with
the National grange of Patrons of
Husbandry, returned to Oregon by
the steamship Oregon, a?id is now at J
Astoria weather-boifwl, 'waiting for
'-transportation to Portland. Mr.
"Shipley returned -with the full con
viction, based upon personal obser
vation in "several states, and meeting '
with a large number of intelligent
men from all parts of the "United
States, that Oregon is truthfully the
bcstvstate of the union in every par-
' ticular. Mr. Shipley has proof of this
-with him, in the matter of facts colla-
ated. We trust that he will see the
necessity of railway communication, to
'-the sea-board also, from the Wallamet
"valley to Astoria.

WINTER.
Tho does not love the'vinter.
The hope, the song, and the play,
The jolty, joyous winter,
"the jingling bells and the sleigh?
lYho does not love tile winter,
The white and beautiful snow,
The gay and festive winter.
While we can play' us we go?
Who does not dread the winter,
Its misery, cold, and gloom,
The bleak and dreary winter,
The cheerless comfortless room !
'Who does not hate the winter,
Its frost, its-cold, its snow,
Merciless, cruel, winter,
Yllen ve can't play as We go ?
