songs were novel, excellently rendered,
and astonished the audience by its ol
inne. Indeed we can safely compare
the singing witli some canaries we have
known, which, though small in stature
had voices of wonderful power and
sweetness. Of the giant, we can only
say he was immense. There, was only
one fault to be found they did not re
main with us long enough.

mercilessly hissed down at Agricultural
.hall. In our boyhood days Mad. Anna
Bishop was the queen of song on the op
eratic itage. But her youth, fresluiess,
and beauty were long since gone, and
.now her voice has left her. Her career
on the concert stage has been a long one
For a time a brilliant one. She was
married to Sir Henry Bishop in the
reign of William iv., and apjieared in
public first at the age of twty-thr-ee.

A private letter from W. J. cber,
hearing date St Louis, Xov. 8th, received
Nov. 25th. informs, us that tlie writer is
in good health,ind anxious to do more
for Oregon than he can do. lie says
that the want of railroad facilities from
the Dalles to Ogden keeps this country
back fearfully. We quote as follows
from his letter: '"You have scarcely any
idea the vast amount of emigration Or
egon loses by them having to pass
through San Francisco, where they arc
obliged to undergo such trials as dis
courage a great many, and disgust them,
with the gentry and m ongolians of the
Pacific coast, for in San Francisco one
who docs not dress well and is in the
stock business, or some other light-fingered
occupation, is classed a "hoodlum.
and consequently, has no rights which a
chinaman or broadcloth-gentlemen are
bound to respect Consequently stran

as much as to say "not wanted." Or at
least they think they are.
