The Cash Principle.
We do not wish to "hurt the feel
ings" of any one by Adopting the cash
principle in our business, but we find
it an absolute necessity to make the
change. We cannot buy paper, ink,
type and presses, nor pay our help
when we are compelled to earn bills
twice, once in the actual work pei
formed, and once again in making col
lections. Another Plundering Scheme.
We have the best of reasons for say
ing that a movement has been inaugu
rated to have the buoy depot at Tongue
point condemned by the federal offi
cials in Washington, and removed to
Portland. Our information comes di
rect from Washington via Port Town
send, and is reliable. This much we
know to-day. Remarks are reserved
for future occasions.
Railroad Talk.
We are in receipt of communications
upon the Astoria railroad topic. We
are at all times anxious to receive the
views 'of writers upon subjects of pub
lic importance, but "there is a time
for all things," and until we receive a
copy of the bill introduced by Mr.
Mitchell, and answers to certain tele
graphic messages sent to the east in
the last few days, we do not consider
that it would be prudent to publish
very much more concerning this mat
ter. Of one thing this public may
rest secure, and feel assured, when the
time comes, -within a week at farth
est, if there is "a cat in the meal
tub" we shall ventilate the whole sub
ject to the satisfaction of every one,
except perhaps the proprietors of the
suspected cat in the meal. We believe
thines are moving along all right, but
in the meantime we are not idling the
hours away.
The Democratic Senate.
The fall elections are over, and the
results of them in the several states
that are to choose new United States
senators, or re-elect old ones, are in a
majority of the instances known. The
senators to be displaced or reseated are
Spencer of Alabama, Dorsey of Arkan
sas, Sargent of California, Perry of
Connecticut, Conver of Florida, Gor
don of Georgia, Oglesby of Illinois,
"Voorhees of Indiana, Allison of Iowa,
Ingalls of Kansas, McCreery of Ken
tucky, Deanisof Maryland, Armstrong
of Missouri, Jones of Nevada, Wad
Jeigh of New Hampshire, Conkling of
New York, Merrimon of North Caro
lina, Matthews of Ohio, Mitchell of
Oregon, Cameron of Pennsylvania,
Patterson of South Carolina, and Mor
ril of Vermont. Of the states named,
Alabama, Arkansas, California Florida
Ohio and South Carolina will, in all
probability, elect democrats to the
seats now occupied by republicans.
Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Miss
ouri and Nortk Carolina will tindobt
edly re-elect democrats. Illinois,
Iowa, Kansas, Nevada. New Hamp
shire and "Vermont re-elect republi
can. Leaving these states doubtful
. or partly se: Connecticut, New York,
Oregon and Pennsylvania.
Here will be a gain of sir votes to
the democrats from the republican
side; none, positively, to the repnbli
tans from the democratic; w&k five
democratic seats reassured, and six
republican. In some of the states,
California included, tine election will
be the coming winter; in others, where
there are annual elections, not until a
year later. Hold-over state senators
are of great consequence in a United
States senatorial contest, especially if
there is no particularly formidable
political adverse majority. Oregon
lias more than once known it to be the
case; and the recent re-election in New-
York and Pennsylvania were conduct
ed m vigorously as they were, more
for the purpose of securing hold-overs,
than for the success of & mere state
ticket.
That the democrats are to have the
control-ef the United States from 1879
to 1881 is certain; and then what?
Will both parties keep on their good
behavior, in the meantime? Time
will tell.
N EWS &P THE MORNING.
The third National Bank of Chi
cago went into liquidation on the 21st.
Senator Mitchell believes all con
tested election cases can be decided
before the holidays.
One thousand men and one hun
dred women applied for situations at
the free labor exchange in San Fran
cisco on the 21st.
The National woman suffrage as
sociation, called the "16th amend
ment" convention of all the woman
suffrage associations in the United
States, will be held January 8, 1878.
The Teviot4ale, an iron ship
bound from Cardiff to India with a
cargo of coals, was abandoned on fire
on the 1st of November, 1876, in the
latitude 12 deg. longitude 70 east,
near the Mauritius, the crew having
been picked up soon after leaving the
vessel. On the night of the 17th Sep
tember, 1877, the mail steamer Hin
dostan, on her way from China to Suez,
came across the abandoned Teviotdale
two days before reaching Aden, and
found the coal still smouldering in her
hold. The fire had thus lasted ten
months, and she had drifted about
two thousand miles in that time.
