" R. C. Walker, Master brig Hazard,
If they signed the following with a
full understanding of what they were
doing?
We, the undersigned, British ship
masters, together with those interested
in the safe navigation of the Columbia
river bar, would respectfully set Jorth
that in our estimation a cruising
' schooner, well manned with pilots,
should cruise in a space from Tilla
mook head to Cape Hancock, and out
side to the westward for a reasonable
distance, say from 10 to 20 miles, ac
cording to circumstances; that such
vessel, with not less than five pilots, is
an absolute necessity to the safe con
duct of ships to and from the bar of
the Columbia. While we recognize
the efficiency of the present system of
tug boats and pilots, as far cs they go,
yet all acquainted with the navigation
of the waters adjacent to this coast
will, we are convinced, recognize the
necessity of some change in the exist
ing state of things and laws.
If so, Where would your schooner
fetch up cruising outside any time the
past twenty days?
We would also be thankful to Capt.
Auld of the City of York, or the board
of trade, if he or they will publish his
statements wherein lie showed the ne
cessity of having a schooner stationed
about the pilot grounds off the mouth
of the Columbia.
Capt. Auld has been here three
times; he is master of a British bot
tom doing a coasting trade between
domestic ports in American waters
in violation of the laws of Congress.
We can produce mariners just as ca
pable and efficient as Capt. Auld, per
haps, who have been in and out of
' this port for years, dozens of times an
nually, American citizens, who will
' make statements proving that here is
y-'ito necessity lor any such schooners as
A
the Portland board of trade profew is
necessary. We will set up the expe
rience of American ship masters, who
pay taxes at home, mind their own
business and attend to their own af
fairs, pursuing a legitimate traffic in
ships owned here, against any such
nwe as the above, which we pronounce
another fraud upon American citizens
by members of the English colony in
Portland.
SrMerchants wishing the popular
"credit check" can purchase them ntTHE
Astorlan office, at less than Chicago
prices. The checks are rapidly growing
in favor. No business man who nan ever
tried the system will ever abandon it. It
saves book keeping, saves lors, to both
customer and merchant, obviates any dis
puted clairob, and in many ways makes It
:i most desirable mode of transacting a
credit business. Try it.
