The Tillamook Trade.-
The steamer General Canby" takes a
full cargo of general merchandise on
her trip to Tillamook bay to-morrow,
thereby proving that wnkt has5 hereto
fore been said with respect" to the
building up of a trade with Tiflamook
bay would be fully established when
a steamer was secured to make the
effort. Dr. Aug. C-Kinney is entitled
to great praise for the part he has
taken to bring about the desired result.
It is to men of this- stamp that the
public must look for benefits to be
conferred by local enterprises' of this,
and other kinds', requiring' pluck com
bined with capital and ability.- There
is no portion of Oregon t&at is more
susceptible of cultivation tftan Tilla
mook county Rich in all the elements
of empire it only awaits' the develop
ment of capital to show its abundant
resources. The fishing: interest on the
bay may be considered secondary to
the agricultural and diarying interests,
and we trust that- the beginning which
Dr. Kinney has- made to- remove the
isolation' of Tillamook may end in un
bounded success. Astoria will enjoy
unlimited- prosperity with Tillamook
county if this- enterprise' is fostered by
the public and carried to ultimate success.-
The same remarks apply to the
developments' being made with the
region1 of Shoalwater bay, and Gray's
harbor, through the efforts of Capt. J.
H. D. Grayy Watson Bros., and Mr.
Geo. W. Hume of this city. Wc are
not over sanguine as to the future
greatness of Astoria if we depend
wholly (as in1 times past)? upon the
shipping as our exclusive' resource for
a healthy growth. The shipping, will
come natiarally with- the development
of the interior of eastern Oregon and
"Washington territory, with the com
pletion of the locks and canal ati the
Cascades and Dalles of the Columbia,
latrt that good timer is- fa? in advance
of the present movement, and although
boisra fide settlement of that region is
gomg on at the rate of a thousand per
sons1 per month at present, it will be a
longer" time than most people antici
pate when the results will be sensibly
felt at Astoria. What we should bend
our energies to, now, is the develop
ment of our own immediate vicinity.
Thousands of people would stop here
more than do- stop, were proper facili
ties at hand to enable them to reach
markets from the lands that are
temptingly laid before them here, in
viting settlement, and the only wise
course to pursue is for lisy as a com
munity, to remove all such obstacles
by placing regular lines of communica
tion on the various routes, as Dr. Kin
ney has placed a steamer between As
toria and Tillamook bay,
A Salty Subject.
When repeating the oft told saying
that "salt would not save," etc., does
it occur to you that there is a great
difference in salt. Many kinds of salt
contain properties which are actually
destructive, instead of containing sav
ing qualities. A man who may be
well versed in the matter of packing
butter, or curing meats, or fish, will
sometimes be baffled in his efforts, and
in spite of himself the carefully pre
pared products of his labor will be
ruined. The prime causes of all dis
asters of this nature may be traced to
the quality of the salt he has used in
his curing operations. Inexperienctd
as we are in such matters, we are per
haps, not qualified to express an opin
ion with respect to the kind of salt
used, but when we hear the experien
ces of men who have devoted years of
their lives to a business requiring ths I
use of salt, we are ready to adopt
their views, and we are informed that
in this market the greatest success is
attained only by the use of the best
quality of Liverpool salt. Carmen
island salt is somewhat better than the
most of San Francisco salt, of which
there are various grades, the best be
ing what is called purified salt, and
this purified salt is salt that has laid
out in the rain3, Bains having been
short in C13ar&f&' this year, purified
safritf short.- It strikes us that if
rains' haver so nAfch to do -with purify
ing: salt, that 2 wet weather is what
-wanted teprodtfee & good article, the
San FraHrcrsco' salt company would be
making money to transfer their opera
tions to- Clatsop or Pacific counties.
There is just as much briny water in
the Pacific ocean up here, as there is
down' there, and considerable more
rain.-
A Public Se&diRg Room. -
We are pleased to know that our
corespondents have awakened an in
terest in this subject which bids fair
to1 end in the accomplishment of the
project. The letter of Mr. Holden
to-day shows a perfectly feasible plan
The location he speaks of is a very
favorable one; the necessities of the
library are fully understood; and as
citizens generally admit the fact that
something, of the kind must be suppli
ed, and several have evinced a dispo
sition to materially aftf the matter; and
as Mr. Holder is thoroughly competent
to carry the enterprise through suc
cessfully; for these reasons, we hope
his efforts will be sustained hope
that subscriptions may be liberally
made, and that the matter will speedi
ly assume tangible shape.

is the proclamation of Gov. Yansandt,
of Rhode Island. There is a large
prayer in those few words.

The steamship City of Bristol
passed through the jetty below New
Orleans on the 1st drawing 20 feet 9
inches. This is the deepest draught
vessel that ever went from New Or
leans. - -
Heavy storms are reported through
out western Illinos and Iowa last night,
and snow fell plentifully. The- gale
sent water into basements along, the
city front at Buffalo.
The Inter-Ocean's Yirgrraa repre
sentative complains that during the
visit of the president he was enter
tained exclusively by democrats, and
that no republicans were invited to the
entertainments. Bosh.-
Ex-Gov. Thomas A. Hendricks is
right. He thinks tn subject of a
successor to Mortore ought not to have
been mentioned during the life of de
ceased. The body has not yet been
buried and the- scramble for this posi
tion is disgraceful to Indiana.
Mr, Goodall, a representative of
the agents of the Pacific Coast Steam
ship company, San Francisco, arrived
in Astoria night before last from Olym
piav via Gray's harbor, and will pro
ceed to Tillamook to-morrow, with Dr.
Affg. C, Kinney of this city.
, The thanksgiving proclamation of
Gov. Vansandt, of Rhode Island,
was about as long as one of Strauss'
locals, in this paper. But then,
Rhode Island is a little state, and
had n't ought to have very long proc
lamations. Brevity is commendable
sometimes.
In Canada if an American teasel
wishes to carry on a coasting'trade, as
for instance British vessels do here between-Portland
and Astoria, permis
sion' must be obtained of the goyern-niest.-
Lately tins was done, but the
press of the country made so many
objections to allowing the "bloody
Hamericans" to do that sort of thing
that" the arrangement was bursted.
An exchange-says "A good- deal of
discussion has been provoked' in the
Ontario press by the late action of the
government in making a temporary
suspension of the law excluding Ameri'
can bottoms from participating in the
coasting trade in the Dominion, in
order to relieve a real or alleged grain
blockade at Kingston. The reality of
the need is denied by Canadian ship
owners."
The Walla Walla Statesman says
it is within bounds to say that the
counties east of the mountains are
gaining settlers at the rare of one
tlmuKind persons a week. The Indian
scare of the early summer for a time
arrested the tide of immigration; but
this was only a temporary interrup
tion, and now the stream is- setting in
aain at the rate noted above. A geu
tleman who has unusual facilities for
getting information, informs us that
full one hundred persons a day are go
ing into the -Palouse country. This,
of course, gives a much larger fijmre
than that estimated, but we prefer to
be within bounds, and place our gains
at the rale of one thousand persons a
month These new comers, too, are
not mere bird of passage, but nine
out of ten of them become permanent
sellers and ore likely to be with us for
the remainder of their lives.
