grand jury on the 11th, surrendered
himself on the 12th, and appeared
before Recorder Hackett, where lie
pleaded guilty and was nentenci'd

thoughts and interests were more
with charitable works. He hunt-elf
was to blame lor his expenses

travagance. From the time he be

to 2,000 on interest at 7 per cent.
He never speculated or lost or won
any money by any wager. He
made investments in enterprises
which promised well, butall turned
-out bad. Long possession of money
of his friends made him look upon
it as his own, and the losses and ex
pense causedeucroaehments upon it.
Times grew worse. The failure of

except the Atlantic, and competi
tion for that had carried prices so
high as to leave no margin for prof
it, -and had made his commissions
thoroughly inadequate to meet

Prior to the panic of 1873 he had
made improper use of trust funds,
omder the pressure of declining
business, and the trouble of that
year had involved him in addition
al bosses. After that time he must
have put forth raised certificates.
JBLe had suffered in thinking of his
business, in abusing the confidence
of his friends. Hoping that the
aiext step would extricate him, he
pluuged deeper and deeper. He
.had not sold any fraudulent securi
ties, but had borrowed on them.
.He .alone was responsible for every
wrong act, and no human being
ever haa a suspicion of it. Suicide
had been much in his thoughts.

erations; to Rev. Dr. Houghton,

"Little Church around the corner,"
And other friends. The scene in
the Court was exceptional. The
counsel who read the paper did so
with a trembling voice. Air. Lane,
who followed, was deeply affected,

The undersigned Sexton of the Astoria Cem
etery, in view of the fact that the cemetery
grounds are now permanently located, wishes
all persons owning lots in the grounds to re
port the number and block to him ; ako, all
persons who have buried friends in the
grounds at any time, are requested to ad
dress him through the Post-oluce, or call upon
him at his office, and furnish him with a list,
embracing the name of deceased, age, when
buried, the lot or block upon which the
burial was made, and such other information
as will enable him to bring order out of chaos.
