.Railroad Interests in Yamhill.
The McMinnville Reporter contains
the proceedings of a meeting held in
Amity on the 21st, to take into con
sideration the feasibility of running a
narrow guage railroad from Dayton to
Sheridan, via Amity. The attend
ance was fair, and proceedings were
quite animated. Hon. Joseph Gaston,
of railroad distinction on the West
Side, attended the meeting, and gave
the people a few items from his store
of information on railroad matters,
lie placed the estimate on the cost of
building and equipping the road at
8,000 a mile, or $1G0,000 for the en
tire distance of twenty miles. A com
mittee was appointed to represent the
subject throughout the count', with a
view of finding out how the project
will be received by the people to be
benefitted by it, and to devise some
specific plan for action to be submitted
at a meeting to be called by them in
the future. The committee consists
ef: Benj. Branson, Sheridan; Capt.
Lafollett, Grand Ronde; Cyrus Smith
and Benj. Syron, Amity, and Capt.
Powell, of Dayton. The project, so
far, is in the hands of good men, who
are capable of stirring up considerable
interest on the work they have in
hand. The farmers of Sheridan are in
an isolated situation, and sadly in
need of some means of transporting
their crops other than by hauling so
great a distance with teams. They are
soundly in earnest on the transporta
tion question, and ready to do their
share in a project that will secure them
the desired object. This report has
come to us time and time again in re
ference to the improvement of the
Yamhill scheme, but as nobody evinced
and spirit of co-operation, it is evident
that they have concluded to seek en
couragement where it is to be found.
Amity is but little better off in the
matter of transportation than the other
section, and her anxiety to secure a
carrier will equal that of Sheridan.
Amity showed a liberal hand in her
effort to get the west side road ex
tended that far a year or so ago, and
another such a strong pull will be an
encouraging effort for the other places
to tie to. With the proper persever
ance and united labor between them
all, there is no reason why this less ex
pensive enterprise may not be put
through. The best part of Yamhill
lies far from the head of navigation or
the railroad depot. There certainly
should be some connecting link of
transportation. This can be secured
only by the enterprise of those who
are most affected.. For six years the
Reporter has been drumming at this
section to get the river improved and
get that connecting link through by
McMinnville, but aside' from a sickly
gulp at the matter now and then noth
ing has ever been done, and the pro
ject lies to-day apparently as dormant
as it did before the coast ranjre of
mountains was made. Our Sheridan
neighbors are entitled to sonie relief.
If Amity and Dayton haye encourage
ment to offer, and this combination
have the vim to consummate the un
dertaking, why all credit be to their
energy and public spirit, an.d success
crown their efforts. We are in favor
of a judicious amount of enterprise
and wherever it shows itself in. Oregon,
we'snaii commend and encourage it.
