Wheat Alloat at Astoria.
For three years past there has been
standing at the head of our market
reports column, a statement that wheat
afloat or in storehouse at Abtoria is on
a par with wheat afloat or in store at
San Francisco. Thai statement is a
fact, and we defy any to prove to the
contrary. Oregon wheat in Liver
pool, or Queenstown, or Cork is above
the value of wheat from any other
state in the Union. So much for all
that.
We iiad hoped that this statement
would elicit an inquiry on the part of
the press of Oregon, and lead the
farmers of the country to demand the
full value for their wheat, but none of
the papers, and but few farmers of the
valley took notice of it until we in
serted a supplemental paragraph as
follews:

The original paragraph stands as fol
lows, just as it has stood month in and
out for three years:
"Wheat. Wheat alloat or wheat in si ore at
Astoria is always par with wheat alloat or in
store at San Francisco.
The object sought to be attained by
the supplemental paragraph, first
above quoted, was to awaken an in
terest among the farming community
by throwing a little of the mysterious
workings of the ring about our work.
The results show that we have accom
plished the purpose wliich we aimed
at, and the following from the Salem
Statesman of the 27th, is the first in
stallment of comments from the press
of the interior. We recommend a
careful perusal of the Statesman arti
cle. In the meantime wheat ajloat
or wheat in store at Astoria is always
par with wlicai afloat or in store at San
Francisco. The Statesman says:
With every day's Astoiuan we are
told that "wheat afloat or wheat in
store in Astoria is worth as much as
wheat afloat or in store in San Fran
cisco," and then in the next paragraph
we are given Astoria prices, 'freight
off." We desired to be informed as to
what is meant by "freight oft' J" We
do not see that phrase in the market
reports, given by any other of our ex
changes. It is not alone our curiosity,
that prompts us to seek this informa
tion. If it is true that wheat in As
toria is worth as much as wheat in San
Francisco, the farmers of Oregon want
to know it, and want to get the bene
fit of that price. We have long seen
the injustice, to the producers of Ore
gon, done by speculators m wheat.
There is no good reason for the great
difference in the prices between Port
land and San Francisco. At present
rates of freight from Portland to San
Francisco, there is a marginal differ
ence in favor of San Francisco of twen
ty cents on the one hundred, or twelve
cents per bushel. But then this dif
ference, great as it is, is less than the
actual expenses of transportation will
show. If it costs two dollars more
per ton to charter vessels for the Ore
gon trade, than for the California,
there is something wrong connected
with our shipping marts, which if true,
Astoria and Portland had better haul
in their signs, and no longer claim to
be anything but inland trading posts.
We have a better opinion of these
points, than to believe, without further
evidence that there is any good reason
for this difference, and are inclined to
the opinion that the difficulty lies in
the greed of our wheat buyers, rather
than in additional costs of transporta
tion. In either case we think the
Portland and Astoria papers sadly re
miss in duty, in not making known the
true cause. If the cause is a natural
one, made so by reason of the dilhcul
ties in transportation, no false pride
should prevent the papers from mak
ing known the facts, but, if it is
through the greed of speculators, they
are unworthy of a place among news
papers when they hold their peace and
surfer the producers of the State to be
made the victims of monopolies and
rings. It is this passive time "serving
policy that plaj's into the hands of the
rich, that makes it possible for the
rich to grind "the face of the poor,"
until "forbearance ceases to be a vir
tue," and the result is, uprising of the
laborers against capitalists.
Either wheat can be shipped from
Oregon as cheaply, or nearly so, as
from California, in which case the
prices ought to be as good as in San
Francisco, or nearly so, or else our
boasted sea-ports are a misnomer, and
our State doomed to play second fiddle
to California;
It is very evident that our prddu-
cers cannot get San Francisco prices

for wheat delivered in Astoria, and the
difference must be expressed in phrase
"freight off."
The Astoriax was never remiss in
duty, in not making known the true I
state of facts. We have in more than !
a hundred instances shown that the I
people were being fleeced by the Port- j
land wheat ring, and we shall main- j
tarn always the same position, that

there is not one obstacle in the way,
except the obstacles placed thre by
the speculators themselves, to prevent
the producer from obtaining the same
prices at Astoria as are paid in San
Francisco for wheat, every day in the
year.
The Compta Case.
Remarking upon the late decision of
Judge Hoffmann in the Compta case,
in San Francisco, the News says:
"Though we do not lay claims to any
legal knowledge, it seems to us, look
ing at the matter strictly from a busi
ness standpoint, that the decision of
Judge Hoffmann in the case of the
British ship Compta must be consid
ered as one establishing a precedent
fraught with danger to the interests of
shipowners, and indefensible from any
view, except, perhaps, from the pro
verbially crooked manner in which the
law seems to view commercial transac
tions. Summarized, the case of the
Compta, as many of our readers know,
was :is follews: She was chartered
in Calcutta to load a general cargo to
San Francisco. Before the ship sailed
efforts were made to break the charter
on account of the alleged unseaworthi
ness of the vessel. The attempt failed,
thus proving that at the time she
loaded in Calcutta the Compta was in
good order and able to carry a dry.and
perishable cargo. The ship encoun
tered heavy weather on the passage,

ignoring the fact that she was passed
on and acknowledged to be in good
order. If this ruling is to hold, all
vessels arriving at this port with dam
aged cargoes, from whatever cause,
will be held liable in the full amount
of the damage, and certificates of in
spectors and other official guarantees
of the seaworthiness of the vessel are
so much waste paper.
The Corvallis Gazette says if the
people of Benton will raise $35,000
they will secure the Yaquina road,
under the proposition made by Col.
Hogg. This money is to be used to
purchase iron for the first ten miles.
Dr. J. H. Bayley has been appointed
acrent to canvass for it.
Mr. Johnathan Riggs, of Polk
county, is desirous of obtaining infor
mation concerning the whereabouts of
his daughter, Mrs. Sophia Dixon, who
started for Oregon on the loth of last
April, from Clarksville, Jackson
county, Arkansas, in company with
Rev. James Marshall and others. The
party started overland with teams,
since when nothing has been heard
from them. Mr. Riggs is very anxious
to learn the whereabouts of his daugh
ter, and with a view to the desired in
formation, other papers are requested
to copy this notice.
