ASTORIA. OREGON:
D. C. IRELA3TD.. Editor.
THURSDAY Oct. 25, 1877
-r-Prince Amadeus of Italy, ex-King
of Spain, through, grief at the death of
iis -wife, intends, it is said, to become
a priest, and has written to the Pope
to that effect. The latter has given
him his benediction. It is thought at
the Quirinai that should he take holy
orders he would soon be created a
Cardinal.
The Deakin comic opera company,
now playing in San Prancisco, consists
of six dwarfs, the tallest of whom is
only thirty-four inches high,and a giant
who is seven and a half feet high.
Commodore Nutt and Jennie Quigley
are the leading performers, and they
are said to be talented enough to please,
aside from their littleness. "Jack the
Giant Killer" is the piece performed.
They are coming to Oregon.
Printin,inks have been invented
in France which possess, among other
advantages, the peculiarity that they
do not penetrate the pores of paper
very rapidly, and do not easily blot.
They are said to be manufactured
from the residue of gas works, from
tar, heavy oil, etc. The component
parts are generally tar, ten parts;
lamp black, thirty-six parts; Prussian
blue, ten parts; glycerine, ten parts.
Miss Minnie E. Hodges, who has
just resigned the position cashier and
money-order clerk in the Des Moines,
Iowa, postoffice, handled and paid out
during six years $4,000,000 and never
made a mistake of a cent. At times
she had charge of the whole office,
with twenty-five and thirty clerks
under her direction, and there never
was a wrinkle or a jar, or an "unpleas
antness" at any time.
The Turks and Russians are both
putting in their best licks just now, in
hopes of accomplishing something de
cisive before General J. Frost puts an
embargo upon further operations un
til another season. Both sides have
lost heavily, and neither have obtained
any decided advantage, although the
Turks, if either, appear to have a lit
tle the best of it.
It is proposed to bridge the Bos
porus at Constantinople; estimated
costj 825,000,000; time, six years.
The projectors will no doubt feel much
encouraged in this scheme by the flour
ishing, condition of Turkish finances
and the promptness with which the
Sublime Porte meets its engagements,
together with the extraordinarily rapid
progress of our own Brooklyn bridge,
which is. not unliklely to be completed
by the close of the century, if alL goes
well; says the Sun.
Every one knows about Vichy's
water, but every one doesn't know
about Vichy. It is a large flourishing
place at the extreme southern part of
the. department of Aliier, France, and
stands on the south bank of the river
Aliier, a tributary of the Loire. The
town is very well built, and was imme
diately improved in the reign of Na
poleon ILL Most of the baths are the
property of the state, and everything
has been done to make the "perfect
cure" as pleasant as possible. In 187G,
3,407,000 bottles of Vichy water were
exported from the. town.
It is estimated that the famine in
India will cost, the Indian government
15,000,000, or.$75;000,000, forrelief
alone. This is a, much larger sum
than was estimated by Mr. Eawcett,
in. a rather despondent speech recently
delivered at Saiisbury. He thought
that it would not cost less than 10,
000,000, and might reach 14,000,000.
The conclusion he drew from the facts
was that there could be nothing in
store for India but bankruptcy, if
these enormous expenditures are re
quired to relieve the famine-stricken
X)eople every few years. The last
famine was in JBehar in 1872-3, and it
necessitated the outlay of 8,500,000.
But the amount paid out for relief is
perhaps the smallest part -of the loss.
The Indian government loses the rent
due by. the starving. The decline in
the value of silver has also been a
heavy drawback.

The contract has been closed in
New York with John Roach & Sons
for two first-class iron steamers of
3,000 tons, each for the Oregon Steam
ship Company, to rnn between San
Francisco and Portland in connection
with the Oregon Central and Oregon
and California Railroads. The ships
are to be constructed with special ref
erence to carriage of wheat aiid other
heavy freight, and to be ready for ser
vice by July 15th next. The new pas
senger steamer- Oregon, for the same
company, is about ready to launch
from Roach's yard, and will sail for
Astoria, about January 15th.
The New York Times account, of
the meeting with Sitting Bull says that
the red devil assigned places for the
commissioners to sit, pointing to the
floor in front of where the savages
were seated. Gen. Terry replied that,
it was a habit of. the whites to sit on
chairs. The Indians explained that
they could not see the Americans, who
partly complying with their request,
the chairs wsre placed with their backs
to the table, so that the commission
sat in full view of the savages. After
this preliminary, Gen. Terry rose and
addressed the Indians through an in
terpreter, stating that- the object of
the commission was to induce the In
dians tp return to the United States,
give up their arms and cease hostili
ties; and if they would return and
hereafter refrain from, acts of hostility
against the United States, & free par
don would be given for the acts com
mitted in the past. The speech of
the general produced no effect on the
savages. The offer of peace was re
jected, the-council broke up,, and the
commissioners turned their f aceB home
ward. We are in receipt of a copy of ike
