Tliis table presents some interesting
statistictil facts, showing a better aver
age proportion of number of days on
the passage from Astoria than from
San Francisco. The best time is cred
ited to the fleet of January last, where
it will be seen that the departures of
the Cth, 7th and 8th, each made the
passage inside of 106 days to Cork,
and one of these (the Norval) made it
in 104: days. The Bluche which left
on the 2d of November should be cred
ited with G7 days lost time, as she had
to put into Victoria a few days after
her departure for repairs, but as she
left Victoria at about the same time
the Norvel, Lutterworth, Loch Fergus
and City of Cashmere left here, the
opposition is that her master would
Ji&ve saved thousands of dollars for his
owners and made a better trip in every
way, if he had not been so very anx
ious to get to sea, as to compel the
pilots to take him out against their
own advice and judgement. But we
do not blame the master of theBluche
so much for this as we do the British
colony in Portland who urged him to
the action which forced his vessel to
sea at a time when she would have
been better and safer in port. The
casualties which caused him his
trouble, occurred far beyond the juris
diction of the Columbia river bar,
and cannot be set down to the dis
credit of this port. It proves, how
ever that masters of vessels ought
never to urge a pilot to take them to
sea against his better judgement,
and is evidence of the fact that the
Portland ring deserve to be indicted
for tampering with a business they
know nothing about, causing the loss
of valuable property, and seriously en
dangering the lives of many people.
These tables arc valuable for reference.
In a few days we shall present a state
ment showing the comparison of time
in a given number of vessels between
this port, and the port of San Fran
cisco, and Liverpool, Cork, and
Queenstown.
"A Terminus for Oregon, not a Sta
tion." With the above motto for their
heading, petitions are now circulated
throughout this city and the state of
Oregon. We say come up every one
and sign these petitions. We petition
Congress to give us a terminus of the
Northern Pacific railroad at Astoria.
We only ask for Oregon with this road
what Washington territory already has.
We boldly say that it is to the best
interests of all Oregon, not excepting
Portland, to have a railroad terminus
at Astoria, and if these petitions are
numerously signed we will ha"e it.
Return the petitions, when signed, to
Dr. Aug. C. Kinney, Astoria, who will
see that they are properly laid before
Congress in time to accomplish the
purpose.

The Coloma just arrived at S.tn
Francisco from the Islands (Sept. 11),
reports the buo3's at Baker's Island
sunk on June 4th, had not been seen
since; after being about the island 27
days Capt. Hall concluded to come to
San Francisco. He also reports a
strong current setting to the eastward,
where it formerly set to the westward.
Baker's Island had been visited with
heavy rains, and the island had been
completely flooded. The once barren
island is now covered with vegetation,
some pumpkin seed that were scatter
ed in different parts of the island hav
ing taken root and grown to large
vines bearing pumpkins. Other parts
of the island were covered with grass,
and in some places the shrubbery had
grown to the height of three or four
feet. Heretofore the water on the is
land was only obtained by condensing
now there is an abundance of it on the
island. The island is almost alive
with rats, who were very much sur
prised at the appearance of vegeta
tion, but it did not take them long to
get acquainted with the pumpkins,
and were at last accounts enjoying
them as food. The bark W. A. Hol
comb arrived at the island some time
since, got a lighter alongside and was
obliged to leave, this lighter was towed
around by the bark for 35 days, but
out of sight of the island, finally she
made the island, landed the lighter
and native laborers and sailed for
Honolulu where she has since arrived.
