JOSH BILLINGS.
The Country Shoo! Mom)
She iz invairablv iust about 23
years and 6 months old, and re
mains rite thare for a term ov years.
She wears her hair either knt
short or hanging around in ringlets,
and iz az precise m all ihings az a
pair ov Fairbank's platform skales.
She never laffs out loud, and sel--dum
even smiles, but when she duz,
-she duz it ackordin to the rules laid
down bi Murray for speaking and
pronouncing the inglish language
iorrektly.
She iz the very essence ov dub
ble extrakted propriety, aud would
Tather be four years behind, the
fashions in her dress and bunnetthan
to spel a word w rong, or parse a
sentence inkorrektly. 0
She keeps a scrap book and an
album, and would prefer rather to
bav the autograft' ov sum milk-and-water
poet than the name ov sum
good man to a sixty day note.
. The country skool mom seldum
dies an old maid, she gits married
generally to sum man who has but
little edukashun, and he thinks (as
he ought to) that thare aint anoth
er stitch a larnt woman az his wife
on the face ov the earth.
Withal! her precise phoolishness,
her pompous knollede, her silky
sentamentalism, and her allmost
allwuss mistaking manner for mat
ter, i respect the country skool
mom. She taught me mi letters,
she was pashunt while i was stuped,
she soothed me when i was frack
.shus, and she often (good soul) giv
me a titbit from her lunchion at
noon time.
May kind heaven strew sura kind
ov happiness in her "pathway, for
she iz paid poorly, worked hardly,
and the step-mother to everybody's
childrun, she never receives from
the world ennythmg better than
the most formal respekt.
INVEST IN LANDS.
Although an investment in Eeal
Estate may not at once prove lucra
tive and yield an immediate income
to the purchaser, we have found,
from many years experience, that all
judicious investments made, either in
farming lands or suburhan property
adjoining a growing and prosperous
city HKe tnis, invariably result in a
fine speculation, or at all events in
one that is doubly sure for a good
paying investment.
In the products of the soil all
wealth has its origin. The indus
trious farmer must always have a
market for his wares. What he has
to sell are the absolute necessities of
life, and he that does not produce
them must obtain them of him who
does.
Whatever may he a man's business,
however much money he may control,
he must look to the tiller of the soil
for that which will sustain life. There
may be local derangements, but on
the whole there is of necessity a
market for every important product,
and the producer must always be sure
of his living, so long, at least, as he
is the owner of the land he cultivates.
In every department of life sunshine
and shadow alternate, but if the
foundation fails, the ruin of the
superstructure is inevitable.
The possession of Real Estate is a
substantial capital. If ones title is
good, no thief can steal it; it needs no
insurance policy to make it safe;
nothing short of an earthquake can
swallow it. A good farm or surbnr
ban garden, with rich soil, judicious
ly managed, whether its commercial
jfold value go up or down, is still the
source of good and comfortable liv
ing. Whatever else r man may
possess, he cannot afford to do with
out Heal Estate sufficient to make
himself and family, if he has one, a
good home.
EStearns' ideas are decidedly
correct. In his Gazetteer he says:
"The Wallamet valley is that part of
the country which has given the
'wet' currency circulating through
Ihe states concerning Oregon. TThe
gentle showers of winter there are
far more preferable to the freezing
winds and chilling snows of the west
ern states, while the temperate sum
mer, warm enough for vegetation
cool enough for comfort, make it the
paradise of the world. It is an old
country, sparsely settled, to be sure,
hutthe land is all owned by families
-vho have held it for twenty-five
-years, or their successors, j&very
necessity and comfort of civilization
is enjoyed by the people with the ad
vantage of certain crops and large
yields, longer seasons for cultivation
and an equal price for produce.
mf u j"-" .newspaper advertising, is now
recognized uy uubincs men having faith in
their own warps, as the most effective
,-,. means -for securing for their wares a wide
recognition of their merits.
