Caxaiiy Seed. About a week ago
the Portland Standard contained an
item about a certain person in Wash
ington territory raising 200 or 300
pounds of canary seed. It sounded
rather large when we read it, but
faded into insignificance a few days
ago when we learned that Joseph
Nixon, Linn county's ex-treasurer, had
raised on his place this year one thou
sand pounds.
Fashionable Once. A lady who
attends all the openings puts the sub
joined story into shape: "We stepped
into a milliner's shop the other day on
business, and accidently sat down on
a bonnet that some one had laid on the
chair. We remained there until no
one was looking in our direction, and
then we quietly got up and stepped on
one side. There was a Lady in at the
time looking for a bonnet shaped to
suit her. She finally found the one
we had finished, and it just took her
fancy. It was just what she wanted,
so she said."
had done for us from Klaskanine, and j
now we have to mention returns from a j
precinct in Washington county. Last
spring we sent some seed corn to Mr. La
Dn, at Mount Coffin, which had been sent
to us from Georgia. Yesterday we re
ceived samples of the product from
that seed measuring seventeen feet
in hight, the ears well filled, hang
just svxen feet from the ground. Who

Drove into a Cistern. After the
arrival of the steamship Geo. W. Elder
in Portland, James C. Liddy, who
drives
hack for the O. T. Co.
took a, load of passengers in his vehi
cle and started with them for their
several homes. The night (about 1:45
a. M.) was so dark as to render objects
in the- streets all but invisible. In
driving past the the intersection of E
and North Park streets, his team took
a plunge into a hole dug for a fire cis
tern in the center of the intersection.
The horses remained in the cistern
until early next morning, when they
were taken out, one of them being
badly injured. The hack was also
somewhat damaged; but fortunately
the inmates and driver escape with a
few slight bruises. There was nothing
put up around or about the hole to in
dicate its existence to the traveler as
should be done in all such cases. The
cistern being so far from the center of
the city, the authorities or the person
under whose supervision it is being
built, probably did not deem it neces
sary to see to it and have the usual
guards and light erected; but the cor
poration will undoubtedly have a
"right smart chance" of a bill to pay
for the neglect.
Rich Display. It is not much won
der that John Jack's troupe went up to
Salem before the fair Champion, and
returned Bonanza. A private letter
from him says : 'Although Astoria and
Astorians have pleasantly occupied my
mind since my departure, the press
of business has prevented me from even
dropping you a line to preserve the
meinorv of irood feeling that exist he- i
tween us. My visit with my company
to Walla Vfalla. the center of the great
agricultural interest destined soon to
develop the great commercial center of
the coast Astoria, was all .the success I
could have desired. At Salem during
the State Fair Jack's (Astoria) theatre
was the center of attraction, and while
all else failed, it did the greatest busi
ness ever done at the Opera-house there.
On Saturday my band with band wagon
was drawn by Y. C. Mvers' splendid
team of four Percheon horses, weighing
in the aggregate fifteen thousand pounds
and valued at twenty thousand dollars.
Off in the morning for Walla Walla,
will visit my stamping ground, Astoria,
during the winter. Remember me with
every feeling of gratitude to my Astoria
patrons and friends, and send Astorian
regularly to Walla Walla for four weeks.
1 had the gratification to meet many of
them at the Fair, and shall always be
happy to hear of, and contribute to their
success."'
