A Case of '-Biter Bit."
A very ingenious swindle "was re
cently attempted in England, and ap
pears to have been in some measure
successful. At Christmas time, when
everybody was giving or expecting
presents, there went to hundreds of
country parsonages hampers of wine,
accompanied by no indications of the
name of the generous giver, and the
recipients were of course placed in de
lightful uncertainty as to which of
their relatives they ought to thank for
the gift. The mystery, however, did
not last long. In due course there
came out a circular letter, which pur
ported to have been sent out before
the wine was dispatched, and stated
that the hamper was a sample, to be re
turned if not wanted, and to be charged,
for if not returned by a specified date,
which date, of course, had passed by
before the disagreeable announcement
came. How many clergymen Mr. A.
Fielding took in by this procedure
cannot be said, but he did not take in
the Yicar of Epping, the Rev. E. Win
slow, for when in due course as honest
readers will be glad to 3aiow Mr. A.
Eielding failed for 6s. 8d. in the pound
and the assignee dunned the clergy
man, the clergyman replied "irlxus: "As
you are the manager and receiver of
the estate, I shall be obliged by your
putting my name down as ? creditor
for the amount of 7s. 8d., "vLrchis due
to me according to the subjoined state
ment: Warehousing a case of wine for
six months, 2; porterage, 3s.; legal
expenses, (consulting a solicitor as to
my liabilities, etc.), 6, 3d.; 2 9s. 8d.
Less one dozen of wine (Burgundy),
2 2s.; due to Rev. E. Winslow, 7s.
8L Being a teetotaler, I ha ve not had
the pleasure of testing Mr. Fielding's
wine and so can give no opinion as to
its quality. I accept your estimate of
its value. I must, however, express
my very warm indignation at the
sharp practice to which, in conjunction
with so many of my brother clergy, I
have been subjected. As far as I am
concerned in this matter, I must own
to a slight feeling of consolation that
is a case of 'biter bit.' "
Mabtiai. Valor. Eort Yuma is
not very heavily garrisoned. It con
tains one soldier and one prisoner; but
from all accounts what it lacks in nu
merical strength is made up in the
heroism of its interior composition.
There has been some difficulty at that
point between the Government and
the Southern Pacific railroad company
as to the right of the latter to cross
the Yuma bridge and run their con
struction trains along, the opposite
shore. A military order was recei7ed
at the fort to prevent the train from
crossing; and when the solitary sol
dier saw the smoke of the approach
ing locomotive and heard its whistle,
he rushed out with drawn sword and
forbade the passage. It is perhaps
proper to say that he exercised more
discretion than a certain liistorical
member of the bovine family, which
placed itself directly on the track,
shaking its horns, and was tossed by
the cow-catcher in the air. The sol
dier stood prudently to one side, and
the train passed on. On accent of
the government's interference, we un
derstand that work will remain sus
pended on the Southern Pacific road
beyond the bridge until there has been
some legislation on the subject.
The Seal Skin Monopoly. "On
he 18lh of April last the treasury de
partment prohibited the killing of fur
bearing animals in Alaska territory,
except the taking of skins by the na
tives and those taken by the Alaska
Commercial company on the islands of
St. Paul and St. George, which are
leased to that companj. Under date
of September 20th the Secretary of
the Treasury addressed a communica
tion to the Collector of San Erancisco
directing him not to issue clearances for
vessels destined for Alaska territory
which are fitted out for killing fur
bearing animals. This order does not
affect clearances of vessels not armed
and those mearly going to those ports
for freight.

The Patent Office Eire. The
board of inquiry appointed by secre
tary Sclmrz to investigate the cause of
the fire in the interior department
building on the 26th ult., have sub
mitted a report in which they state
that there is no foundation whatever
for the supposition that the fire was
caused by incendiarism or spontaneous
combustion. They find that a fire was
built of pine boards and a blower
placed over the grate in the ladies'
copying room in the Ninth-street base
ment on the morning of the day on
which the fire occurred; that the roar
ing of fire attracted the attention of
the persons in the room, and was a
subject of comment by them at the
time. The board, in conclusion, call
the attention of the Secretary to the
condition of several of the flues under
the roof on the Seventh and E-street
wings of the building, which appear
from personal inspection to have been
defective and unsafe for a long time,
and which, if not speedily repaired,
may be the cause ef further disaster.
