NOTES ANE COMMENTS.
It having been stated that Sacra
mento river salmon caught out of sea
son, unlike Columbia river salmon, was
a merchantable article, the News edi
tor addressed Mr. B. B. Redding,
secretary of the fish commission, on
the subject, from whom he received a
reply from which we quote as follews:
"When the fish first come in from
the ocean they are of superior flavor
quite fat, and showing a layer of white
curd between each layer of iiesh. As
the salmon does not eat in fresh water
after it comes in from the ocean, the
eggs and milt are matured at the ex
pense of the fat and muscular vitality
of the fish. Soon after the first of Au
gust the eggs and milt mature, the
white curd and fat disappear, the sil
very scales are absorbed, and the skin
turns black. It is then as unfit for
human food, and as feverish as a hen
would be taken from her nest. The
canneries of the Columbia river cease
work on the first of August, as it has
been found that salmon canned after
that date have so deteriorated as to
injure the reputation of the whole sea
son's catch in foreign markets. It is
reported that canneries on the Sacra
mento have been at work catching and
canning over-ripe fish since the first of
August. The effect will be to reduce
the reputation of the Sacramento sal
mon to second and third class. K is
to be hoped that next season the can
neries will repair their error, by catch
ing and canning only during the sea
son, when the fish are in perfect con
dition, and during the time when proper
and wholesome laws provide they may
be caudit."
General Crook narrowly escaped
assassination at the hands of Crazy
Horse on the occasion of the recent
disturbance at lied Cloud Agency.
Crazy Horse had been working to
breed discontent among the Indians,
urging them to go on the war path,
but could not succeed. Among the
northern Indians he had been pretty
powerful, but when he came to the re
servation he found so many chiefs who
were regarded his superiors that he
lost all his influence and became angry
and ill-natured. General Crook sent
word that he wished to talk with him,
and started out with Mr. Clark, an
Indian agent and interpreter, to see
Iiim. On the way down to the Indian
camp General Crook was overtaken by
a carrier, who said that Crazy Horse,
in conversation with his men, had
said that he intended to talk pretty
saucy to General Crook, and in case
the General should object he would
kill him. General Crook and his com
panion, who were unarmed, abandon
ed the idea of having a talk with Crazy
Horse, and the plotter's arrest and
death followed.
The Commercial News, referring
to freights and charters, says the mar
ket is, and has been during the past
week in a peculiar position. Wheat
freights have reached a point much
lower than ever before known, but
owners and shipmasters have shown a
disposition to accept current rates.
"This, in connection with the fact of
short sales in the English market, has
resulted in several engagements, both
for loading here and in Oregon.
Wheat has absorbed all the advance in
the English market, but fanners con
tinue reluctant sellers, and the grain
now going aboard ship is partly Oregon
wheat and partly purchases made
some time since, both here and in the
interior. It is impossible to quote
freight rates with any accuracy. A
large -wooden ship has accepted 1 lGs
to Liverpool, and a medium-sized iron
ship has obtained 2 2s Cd for the
same port. These rates, together -with
those published below, will show the
r.mge of the market, but itjseems at
present as if the rate ships obtain de-
pends largely on the acuteness of the
broker and the anxiety of the charter
ers, to obtain a vessel. Outside busi
ness has been more active and some
little business is doing in lumber char
ters at low rates for China and the
West Coast. The disengaged tonnage
in port now foots up 59,589 tons, a
small falling off from last week. We
have 12,154 tons miscellaneous in
port, 2G,467 tons engaged for wheat
from here, and 6,220 from the Colum
bia river. "
The Era of Good Fcelini
In one of Horace Greeley's last let
ters, (Nov. 8, 1872), just published for
the first time, he says: "Well, I am
used up. I cannot see before me. I
have slept little for weeks, and my
eyas are still hard to close, while they
still open again. But no more of this.
You, my friend, went into this contest
for me. You knew as I did that wc
must stop fighting the rebels some
time. But it is now settled that we
never shall." If the good old man
was alive now he might say different.
It is evident that the numerous invi
tations to President Hayes by the
southern people to pay them a visit
were sincere. Wherever he goes he
receives an ovation, and regrets are
expressed at his inability to extend his
journey further into the land than has
been marked out as its limit. 2sone
have greeted him more cordially than
Governor Wade Hampton, of South
Carolina, who attached himself to
the President as one of his escort, and
made stirring speeches, full of recon
ciliation and patriotism, wherever he
went. This voluntary exhibition of
southern hospitality is strongly in proof
of returning national brotherhood and
fraternity
