Sw-rrs' 00 u; f1 . 3Jfcj& siXyj storcimx. ASTOFJA. ....Oct. 4. IS77 OREGON SVMMERS. From tho Standard. The important advantage that Ore gon lias over California in the matter of unfailing seasons has been well ventilated and will be thoroughly un derstood after awhile by immigrants seeking homes on this Pacific coast. J3ut another and equal important ad vantage is the great mildness of our summer. We published yesterday an extract from tho San Francisco Bulletin showing the extreme heat now obtaining in California the thermometer at points in the interior going up to 113 degrees. It is burn ing up the crops, the vegetation, the roses and the leafy June trees are shedding their leaves so rapidly as to indicate Autumn instead of mid-Summer. Here we have almost the gen iality of uniling Spring, just enough -of heat to make the weather delight ful, while blankets are indispensable .at night. It is true the mercury indi cates what would in the east be a .high degree of heat, but the same Jaws do not seem to govern the weath er here as there. Ilere at ninety de grees it is not disagreeably hot, though in New York it would melt all tile paper collars in use on Broad way. The difference is said to result from the greater dryness of our at anosphere; that when we have hot -weather the heat passes out from the body; that the pores are all open and so sensitive that the slightest change of temperature produces chilliness, md that the hot Eastern atmosphere, "being humid, causes the heat to be retained. Here the caloric radiates from one; there it continues to accu mulate. Here though it passes up to the nineties at times, it never gets on beyond a hundred rsin California, and our vegetation is never burned up. An Oregon Summer is one of the most delightful enjoyments ii- nature, ami u lieu its extraordinary character shall become thoroujrhlv understood our State will become the summering place of the wealthy who live below us and of many eastern people. Our lovely bays will become more famous than the Italian and our beautiful sea beaches will furnish watering places more sought after than Long island and Saratoga, Yaquina, Coos, Tillamook and Umpqua bays will yet be famous. Advertising by Splurges. Profit able and successful advertising is an arl founded upon principles which may be said to constitute a science. Most sa gacious business men who advertise ex tensively do not go upon blind, irregular impulses, but proceed according to an in telligent and well-considered system which ihey have deltberntely adopted. Such men understand perfectly that one of the mot valuable secrets of profitable adver tising consists in constantly keeping them aelvo and their special line of business be fbre the public. The name of the firm, its location and the articles or class of articles in which itdeals, must be familiar ized to the public eve, and through that to the public mind. It is the constant dripping that make its impression upon even the hardest rock. To effect this, ateady and continuous advertising is far better than occasional splurges, no matter how showy and attractive. It is no doubt true th t a big splurge three or four limes a year, filling a colum or two with display heads and double-leaded matter, has its effect. But unle- thoe spasmodic appeals are supplemented ar.d reinforced by small standing advertisements they are in danger of making no la-ting impression. In the long run the persistent advertiser, whoso name .stares the lead it in the Jace every time he takes up his paper, will accomplish his object much more effectually than his rival who lelies upon a splurge every three ot six month-. This is a principle which needs only to be slatted ir. order to secure lecognition by sagacious business men; and almost all men of thatcla-s who have succeeded in building up a great business by advertising have acted upon it. Send the Stamps. When you want a copy of a nepuper send the valueof itin stamps, then you will not be disappointed. If you are a coi respondent or have an advertisement in the paper, you are entitled to a complimentary copy of the paper containing itsentto3'our pot office, at the time of publication; lor it takes time to hunt up a copv thiee or six months after it i- published and time cost- money in a printing office, so send enough stamp- to pay thf publisher for the paper and time requited to hirit it ut. Another peint: AY hen you write to a man lor your own information ami linelit, and which you are -attied would be of no interact or benefit to him, inclose stamps to pay both jiotae and ilie value ol the writing mate rial used, and you will, very likely, get the information desiied.
