Destitution in San Francisco.
San Francisco lias hundreds, per
haps thousands of men deprived of
employment and reduced to destitu
tion by the influence of the drought ;
and the Alta says, these men must re
ceive more help than the benevolent
societies now in existence have the
means of providing. Either a new
association must be organized, or ad
ditional resources must be provided for
at least one of those heretofore estab
lished. The present crisis is except
ional in its origin, and will, we hope,
be brief in its duration, not lasting
longer than till December next, when
we expect the rains to revive industry,
restore confidence and make a demand
for work. As to the willingness of the
wealthy citizens as a class to contri
bute whenever they see the need of
help, there can be no doubt. They
have never refused the appeal of the
suffering. "When Sacramento city was
visited by a flood, boats laden with
food and clothing were sent to the suf
ferers; and other places more remote
were treated in the same spirit. The
worthy poor in their midst will not get
less aid. The kinds of relief to be
given, and the methods of distribution
are matters for consideration. A soup
house has been found to be effective
and economical in various eastern
cities, and it may be advisable to pro
vide for paying rents for families and
sending bread to them under strict but
kind supervision.
South America.
"What a delightful country to live in
must be that western coast of South
America! Unless mistaken occasion
has forced a similar, if not identical,
expression before. Ay, and what a
delightful country to die in, especially
if one be emulous to pitcliing head
foremost into a graping volcano, being
inured in a lake of seething, hot la
va, or sent to kingdom come in com
pany with some million tons of ejected
red-hot rocks or rivers of scalding wa
ter. Cobija, in Bolivia, appears a fa
vorite spot for the sports of the gods
who hold their orgies in volcanic halls,
and send forth the echoes of their mu
sic and the murmurings of their grand
orchestras for the benefit of the sen
oritas of that happy land. And Iqui
que is twin to Cobija in such delights.
Copiapo preceded these two towns a
few days in a similar display. The
last shock at Cobija is reported as se
verer than the one experienced last
May. The inhabitants of those places
are reported as escaping in great ter
ror. The xeople there, as elsewhere,
do not gain courage by experience in
such cases. The more and oftener the
shock, the greater the fright.
Northern Pacific R. II. Lands.

New Taconui, W.T. .Sept. 2c, 1877. j
Kditok Asroitr.vx :
Dear sir: In the Daily Astouiax
of Sept. 21st, under "Xeeds Explana
tion," you assume to understand that
a settler is charged by the Northern
Pacific railroad company for his own
improvements made on railroad land,
allow me to say that you have been
misinformed.
No extra price is ever fixed on rail
road lands in consequence of improve
ments made there by the settler.
Prices are fixed according to the
value of the timber, its accessibility
to deep water, etc., its prominence as
a business point, or its adaptability to
agricultural pursuits.
Where a large tract is accessible
onVy at a single point, which is es
teemed valuable by reason of its pecu
liar location, and a party desires to
purchase only a few acres, embracing
that valuable point, and thereby defect
the sale of the balance of the tract, or
render it less valuable, ve must nec
essarily ask a much higher jr acre,
than would be ashed for the Liiul under
different circumstances.
Yfelaiow of no case covered by the
circumstances you cite. I therefore
hope that this explanation ie sntisfac
tor$ . Yours truly,
. -D. 0. Lewis.
3Elnj- Ground of tlic Bend.
Late I sat, and lonely wandered
By my melancholy led,
Till I entered stately Greenwood;
Marble city of the dead !
"When a strangely gentle feeling
Stole upon my troubled mind,
And bestowed a sense of quiet
That I could not elsewhere find.
In the thought that even infants
Sleeping on their mothers breast,
Might have found, upon earth's bosom
Here, a still more perfect rest;
And I yielded to the dreaming
Of my trouble-tortured brain,
That had snatched a moment's respite
From its overweight of pain,
Till it seemed as in the stillness
There arose a spirit-mirth
From the melancholy hillock
In the monumental earth.
And I fancied, as the flowers
Swayed and tossed in pleasant yaves
That the dead had turned to children
And were playing 'niong the graves!
Man, returned again to childhood;
To its innocence and truth;
To the confidence, the courage,
That belongs alone to youth.
"While the music of their laughter
Rose above the summer sod,
Like a grateful, joyous power
To the one and holy God;
1 returned my footsteps homeward ;
That the hard, unhallowed tread
Might not disturb the echoes
In that play-ground of the dead.
Still my wearied soul is anxious,
And my burdened spirit craves
To be numbered with those happy
Children playing 'mong the graves.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
Mr. Hale has been so badly abus
ed by the New York papers for roast
ing a few dozen workmen in his tinder
box piano factory, that he thinks of
going to St. Louis and starting into
business amid the ruins of the South
ern hotel. The Globe says he would
be the right man in the right place.
The will of the late Edwin Forrest,
the great tragedian, is to be contested
by a youth who claims to be a nephew
of the testator. The claim is decided
ly thin, in view of the fact that, a few
years before his death, Mr. Forrest,
writing to a friend, declared himself
the last of his blood or family then
living.
TVatterson says he never said that
a hundred thousand Kentuckians
would march to Washington to pre
vent the inauguration of Hayes, he
only meant that that number, or there
abouts, would invite him to visit Ken
tucky and test on its native soil the
merits of that generous beverage which
is identified with the prosperity and
renown of the state.
