INVEST IN LANDS.
Although an investment in Real
Estate may not at once prove lucra
tive and yield an immediate income
to the purchaser, we have found,
from many years experience, that all
judicious investments made, either in
farming lands or suburban property
adjoining a growing and prosperous
city like this, invariably result in a
fine speculation, or at all events in
one that is doubly sure for a good
paying investment.
In the products of the soil all
wealth has its origin. The indus
trious farmer must always have a
market for his wares. What he has
to sell are the absolute necessities of
life, and he that does not produce
them must obtain them of him who
does.
Whatever may be a man's business,
however much money he may control,
he must look to the tiller of the soil
for that which will sustain life. There
may be local derangements, but on
the whole there is of necessity a
market for every important product,
and the producer must always be sure
of his living, so long, at least, as he
is the owner of the land he cultivates.
In every department of life sunshine
and shadow alternate, but if the
foundation fails, the ruin of the
superstructure is inevitable.
The possession of Heal Estate is a
substantial capital. If ones title is
good, no thief can steal it; it needs no
insurance policy to make it safe;
nothing short of an earthquake can
swallow it. A good farm or surbur
ban garden, with rich soil, judicious
ly managed, whether its commercial
gold value go up or down, is still the
source of good and comfortable liv
ing. Whatever else a man may
possess, he cannot afford to do with
out Real Estate sullicient to make
himself and family, if he has one, a
good home.

local notice mode or advenising is
becoming very popular with many
business men, who find, that in ad
dition to a regular advertisement, it
pays them to insert an occasional lo
cal notice at 25 cts per veek,or special
notice, lOcents per line. Persons are
requested to write their own notices,
as we are liable to "string" them
out u business is business." Our
columns are open to all our business
men, alike. We have no "pets or
favorites," beyond fair, legitimate
business. If one dealer should happen
to advertise in little stronger terms
than suits somebody else, in his line,
we know of no better way to get even,
than by advertising more liberally. !

him to receive a valuable considera
tion for that ad., and he could not,
reasonably, expect us to " throw in,"
half as much more in locals. .Mer
chants or grocers are not in the hab
it of doing that kind of business, and
why should they exact it from the
newspaper man? "Right wrongs no
one." A moment's calm reflection,
on the subject, will materially
change the Lotions of some people,
we think.
The people of Oregon are not burned up

They do not live in fear of being carried
to untimely graves in hundred, by the

ern states, nor of being overwhelmed by
earthquakes that visit California every
two or three year?, nor yet by its floods
every fifth or tenth year, not dried up by
its drouth every third or fourth year.
The summer diseases so destructive to
human life among children in thcAtluntic
states are almot unknown in Oregon.
Oregon offers great attractions to those
in search of new nomes, to-wit: Healthy
and attractive diversity ol surface. Grand
scenery and mild climate. JNo excessive!

mer, 67, winter 39. Thunderstorms
very rare, hurricanes unknown. Dsn th
ru to lower in Oregon than in any other
State, east or wet. Soil of unsurpassed
fortuity, especially suited to cereals, fruits,
flax, hops, and hay. No failure f crops
in Ores; n for thirty years from any cause.
No droughts, as in California. Great
abundance of the finest fruit. Stock-raising,
very profitable. As a farming county
Oregon is not surpa-?ed by any part of
the Union.
