ASTORIA, OPwEGON:
D. C. IRi:i.AXI Editor.
TUESDAY..
.Sept. IS, 1S77
Astoria a Grain Center.
We arc ple:ised to liear that a move
ment is on foot at Astoria looking to
the formation of a company with a
cash capital sufficient to load at least
one vessel a month with wheat to the j Crawford, Jno L
, . ml. . . . Clark, Minnie ft
United Kingdom. Ihis is a step in Cameron. Neil
the right direction. How are ship
owners to know whether they have a
chance to obtain a cargo or not at As
toria, unless some such organization is
perfected. The fact h:is become very
generally understood that the deepest
vessels afloat can come to Astoria, and
the further fact is established that
wheat afloat here is always worth :is
much :is wheat afloat in San Fran
cisco. Heavy owners in the commer
cial ileet of the world should now be
apprised of the fact that Astoria has a
storage capacity equal to To, 000 tons
of wheat, and that a cargo can always
be obtained here at ruling market
values. Jf this thing can be carried
out there v. ill be less warehouses to
rot down at Astoria, useless to their
owner; there will be at once an in
crease in the commerce of the porr,
and several successful Isaac Friedlan
ders may be developed in our midst.
Ve :issert that a joint stock corpora
tion, acting upon this plan, with a
bnsjs of $25,000 capital, could ship one
full cargo monthly on safe grounds;

and without straining a point, thrib
ble or quadruple the capital stock
every year, regardless of priecs cur
rent, but by taking the average mar
ket quotations :is a rule for five years
past, :is an index. If we were to ap
point a committee to work this matter
up Ave should entrust it to Messrs.
Kinney, Captain Berry and J. 11. D.
Gray; and we venture to say that if
those gentlemen will undertake it
now, inside of five or ten years they
would be the solid men of Oregon;
and the evidences of their ability to
build up a city would be everywhere
apparent about Astoria.
15rigam Yo jink's "Family
Brigham Young has been the hus

Snively. Margaret Pierce, Sirs. Twiss,
Emily Partridge, Martha Boker, Eli?a

and Eliza Webb. All except Emeline
Free and Ann Eliza AVebb were his
