ASTORIA, OREGON :
-1. C. IBEI.AXI EDITOR
.SATURDAY .-. J use 10. 187C.
Ex-Govemor Woods for Vice-President.
From tho Altn California.
sow, -while that "slate" is being
made, we ask for a recognition. We
place before the country and the He
publican Rational Convention, to
meet in Cincinnati vdthin four weeks,
the name of a gentleman known all
over this coast, and as popular as
well known. Tie lias been Govern
or of Oregon y choics of the jpeople,
and Governor .2 TJtsA by appoint
ment of the Presilont, and in each
case filled the office with great ability
and satisfaction to the people.
He is now a resident of this State
and this city, a lawyer eloquent at the
bar or on the stand, ever true as
.steel to the cause of the country;
-who has gone through such a furnace
as that of Governor of Utah, coming
out like the Hebrews, without -the
smell or fire upon him. This man is
ex-Governor George L. Wood, who
has been named as a fit candidate for
nomination for Vice-President on the
Reiniblican ticket. AVc herewith'
quote from the Salt Lake Tribune on'
this subject, and endorse them so far
as the character and fitness for the po
sition of Governor Wood is in ques
tion. He would prove a popular
candidate.
Prom the Salt Lake Tribune.
If Mr. Blaine is to be the choice
for President, and every day seems
to add to his strength, we see no
good reason why that staunch friend
of Utah, Hon. George L. Wood,
should not be put upon the Republi
can ticket for Vice-President. This
would be spanning the continent,
choosing our highest officers from the
, extreme east and the farthest west,
and thus regarding the geographical
equities of the case. The "New York
Herald speaking of this eminent
Statesman, says he "is mentioned in
many quarters as a favorite Pacific
coast candidate," and then correctly
.speaks of him as ''a pioneer of early
days, a statesman and
one
of
the
the
he
his
.most accomplished orators in
country." As Governor of Utah,
won an enviable refutation, and
friends among the non-Mormons in
this heavenly kingdom are to be
numbered by the thousands. In thes.e
days of policy and self-seekhig. Gover
nor Wood's gift of continuity, his firm
and persistent devotion to principle,
stands out prominently, and marks
him as a man fitted to labor in a more
extended sphere of usefulness. His
ringing utterances on the platform
have thrilled many -an ear, and in ad
dition to his superior powers of ora
tory, he possesses a .magnetism which
attracts all with whom he comes in
-contact. This was abundantly shown
in August, 1874, when m this city an
infuriated mob of nearly a thousand
men threatened destruction to the U.
S. Marshal's office, where the corruot
-Jeter Clinton, a police magistrate of
the most malig.isnt type was confined.
Mounting a wagon which stood in the
middle of the street, the personal pop
ularity of the Governor won him a
hearing, and in a few ' appropriate and
well-chusen sentences he stilled the
passions of his auditors and prevailed
on them to disperse and go to their
homes. As Governor of Oregon- and
Utah, this Pacific coast statesman has
won an honorable record, and no bet
ter choice for the two highest offices in
the Rejmblic could be made, than
Blaine of Maine, and Wood of the
Golden State.

An Editor's Appeal. As the report
that we are very wealthy lias eone abroad
Jamong our subscribers, and has made
them awiui slow aoout paying up, tmnK
ing, doubtless, we do not want the money,
we hasten to say the report of our wealth
is false in every particular. If ocea.i
steamers were selling at a cent a dozen,
we could not make the first payment on
a canoe. The lightning of poverty has
struck us square, and had it not been Jbr
an armful of ha3' wlrch our devil man
aged to steal irom a blind mule, our
Jamily would be without a mouthful
to eat at the pre ent moment. Is
not this a sad picture, and can you de
linquent subscribers look upon it without
feeling the coin rattle with indignation in
your pocket. "We do not like to dun you
but we must if you fail to take the hint.
Taki: Youk Local Pai'Ku. A man in Marion
county last week saved 610 by taking hu
local paper, tho Mercury, and there is a man
in this county, near lirownsville, who told us,
a chort time apo, that he had made anM)-acrc
tract of Ian. by being a reader of the Demo
crat, lie had been wanting for a long time to
buy an M). adjoining his farm, but could get no
track of the owner, who was a non-resident of
the State, and finally saw it adveitiscd for
tax sale in the Deinociat. Jlo attended tho
sale and bought it for a nominal sum, and is
now the owner of it. Albany Democrat.
