ASTORIA, OREGON :
ly. C. IBEIASD EDITOR
ERIDAY. :June 9, 1876.
France is taking out her revanche
in a far more satisfactory way than by
powder and shot. According to the
Vos Gazette, Berlin gets all her arti
cles, not only of luxury and fashion,
hut also of common necessity, from
the French. Books, shirts and but
tons are imported in large quantities
from France, the productions being
better and cheaper than those of Ger
many. "If things go on like this,"
says the philosophic writer in the
German Gazette, "France will soon
get back the milliards she paid to her
eonquerer, and which, in fact, have
never procured the least advantage to
German citizens.
The Kew York journals and the
Eastern Telegrams have added recent
ly to their stock of quiet sensation
al, the subject of contesting the
will of the late Mr. Stewart. Wheth
er those claiming relationship have
commenced proceedings in the courts,
contesting the will, do so with airy
very strong hopes or expectations of
breaking that legal instrument, we are
not advised. But that they are de
termined to show the community and
the world that Mr. Stewart wronged
them in declaring that he had no rela
tions by blood is evident enough.
.If they are right, as they claim, and
can prove their kinship, who shall
blame them for not being willing to
endorse the assertions of Mr. Stew
art, that he had no relations? They
do riot relish the declaration, which
ignores them altogether. And who
can wonder that they do not, and who
can blame them? If their claims be
true, who -can excuse Mr. Stewart for
denying his own blood relatives, who
are of high standing, if they do have
less millions than had Mr. Stewart?
The cost of a month's stay in
Philadelphia, with daily visits to the
Exhibition, will be as follows, suppos
ing the visitor to practice such econo
my as is not inconsistent with comfort
and with the objects of his visit:
Room, breakfasts, dinners, Thirty ad
missions, street car fares, amusements
and incidentals, 125. By taking reg
ular board in a boarding house or
small hotel, the cost of living can be
so reduced that the first three items
can be brought down from $75.50 to
10 or 50, and perhaps even to
$30. A week's stay at a first class ho
tel and daily visits to the fair may be
estimated to cost as follews: Board,
admission, car fares, incidentals, $45
The maximum price for hotel board
is $5 per day. There are plenty of
excellent houses where the charge is
from $3 to $4, and in many
good, comfortable hotels it is as low as
$2 to $2 50. Boarding-house charge
from 6 a week and up for room and
meals. At the Granger Encampment,
about seven miles out on the line of -the
Pennsylvania Railroad, rooms in rough
Bhed-like structures are furnished at!
fifty cents a night, and meals at an
equally moderate price. Li short,
there are all kinds of prices for all
kinds of people, just as in other cities,
wimre mere is no world s lair.
A REAr-riFUL Sentiment. The I
following beautiful sentiment was re-
cently uttered by Judge John L. T. j
Sneed, of a "Western ceurt:
"Tl,o ;n W -n, ,i::i . :

though fabulous and mythical, is vet !
more eloquent in its significance. "We

are told that the little creature called
ermine is so sensitive to its own clean-
t
liness that it becomes paralyzed and

functions of judge."
When will the Common Council
order a tax, if necessary, to improve
the cemetery grounds ?
Births, marriages and deaths
will be inserted free of charge to sub
scribers to either the Daily or the
Weekly Astoiuan. Births or marria
ges, when sent in by persons who are
not subscribers to the paper, should
be accompanied with one dollar,
which will be placed to the credit of
the party and the paper will be sent
to the address for the full amount so
paid to us.
Dox't Rkad AnvKRTiSKMKNTs. -Occasionally
:i business man is encountered who profecses
to believe that" people don't read advertise
ments any how !" A greater mistake is sel
dom made. If a typographical error creeps
into an ad. it soon becomes the talk of the
neighborhood, and if tho people do not read
ads. how do they drop' on errors with such
facility ? Tho other day tho advertise went of
the Centennial Restaurant appeared, in which
the.word " eating" was set up" fating," where
upon avo were dub notified of the error by
seven Salinasites and one Chinaman, and last
ly, tho .Monterey Herald felt in duty bound to
notify us also. Daily Jlecordcr, Salinas City,
California.
Take Your Local Paper. A man in Marion
county last leek saved SloO by taking his
local p per, the Mercury, and there is a man
in this countv. near lirownsvillc, who told us,
a bort time ago, that he had made anfcO-acro
tract of land by being a rea 'or of tho Demo
crat. Ho had been wanting for a long time to
buy an 80. adjoining his farm, but could get no
track of tho owner, who was a non-resident of
the State, and finally saw it advertised for
tax sale In the Democrat, lie attended the
sale and bought it for a nominal sum. and is
now the owner of it Albany Democrat.
Advkrtise An exchange savs: Mayho
you think that people don't like to read
advertisements ! If you do you are much
mistaken. Fresh, well-put well-placod ad
vertisements are news ! They aro welcomed,
road nay, studied I The newspaper that is
alive with them is increasingly acceptable
and so is tho business house that knows how
to get them up, possessed withal with the
sagacity and nerve to keep them up.
