''TUESDAY JnkE 6. 1876.
Salonica old ThesaJonioa.
The recent riots at Salonica afford
a curious coincidence in comparison
rith the days when it was called Tlies
alonfca, and was visited by the apos
tles. Then Salonica was one of the
cradles of Christianity. Li ancient
times the Apostle Paul established a
church there, which subsequently
'numbered in its records several names
distinguished in the annals of Chris
tianity. Two epistles were written
by Paul to the Thessalonians, and
more than once the place is mentioned
as a sort of missionary station, for
which its situation at the head of the
Gulf of Salonica rendered it admira
bly suitable. Before this it had been
celebrated as the place where Xerxes
halted and recruited his troops on his
fatal march to Greece. Here also,
when exiled, Cicero found a tempo
rary abiding place. Its line situation
as a naval port gave .it importance
under the Roman Empire, but after
that fell it steadily declined, being
several uimes a sufferer from siege "mid
storm, -until finally 'taken l3r -the
Turks in 1430, in whose jwssessidn it
lias sincfe remarked. During the
Greek v. ar for independence, Salonica
was suspected by tlie Turks of sympa-
tJiizmg witJi tne rebels, and a leaiiui
jiofc of Mussulmans took place, m
which nearly all the Greek Christians
of the towns perished. At present the
town is of no great importance, !
having a population of about 70,000, f
of whom not more than hair are Mo
hammedans. The result of this sudden outburst of
passion will not likely be serious. The
dispatches intimate that the Christians
brought on the trouble by interference
with what the Mohammedans are prone
to consider their dearest ri&ht that,
of proselyting. It is not impossible
this ma3r be true, as the state of Tur
key, and its dependence for existence
on the Europen Nations, are well
Known 10 ail tlirotignout tlie rone'S
dominions, and this knowledge -may
have tempted the Christians to nn- plv in person or by letter to the following

hoped, is merely an idle story or a i
vicious falsehood. The readiness of'
the Nations concerned to demand '

the guilty, and Hie necessity the Porte

matter at present. A fdw dozen of
the rioters will be hanged or shot,
quiet will be restored, the Consular
offices vacant will be filled by new
appointees, and the Porte and his
rotten kingdom granted a new lease
of imbecile existence.
.
The Oregon Steam Navigation
'Company own a controlling interest in
twenty four steamers, five barges,
'two railroads, all the locks, canals,
basins, etc., and is Virtually master
of the commerce fcf Oregon to-day,
but they know how to liandle the
position for the further development
of Oregon, and we guess they will do
it, without prejudice.
We shall be in favrfr of a law 'tax
iing foreign travelers or iiriimmci's wTho
every year visit this coiinfay and sell
darge quantities of goods. The local
dealers all py tsiss but these druni-
itners are permitted to cbme and sell
loofti'to any extent and pay iio 'tax
'in-ilve State, and it 'is .wrong.
The Turks, Arabians and Persi-.
ans at Philadelphia have been the
objects of so much attention from the
rough nd rowdies of that ci;y as to
render :their visit exceedingly un
pleasant. At first they dressed in
tlieir natidnal costumes, but a single
day's experience satisfied them that
they must adopt American garments
if they would be free from a crowd of
street loafers, and from continual in
sult in the streets and even in the
Exposition grounds. They are all
now accordingly arrayed in black
broadcloth clothes and silk hats, a
la Yankee. While an inquiry as to
the whereabouts of those hundreds
of boasted special policemen of Phila
delphia, and their ability to protect
the city's gliest from the jeers of the
rabble, is now quite in order, it may
perhaps better be preceded by the
question, what would the Philadel
phia papers say if delegates from that
city were to visit a fair in Constanti
nople or Mecca, and be forced'to don
robes and long skull caps, in order to
be saved from insult.
John, the heathen, don't seem to
take kindly to the alphabet. One of
those being taught at the Sunday-
School in Eugene, recently demon
strated the perfect ease with which a
Chin ainan can swear, regardless of
xi'iie or place, when that subject is
under consideration. The lady teach
er had succeeded in learning him A, B
and C, but D was a stumbling block.
Finally John got excited and rose up
and said to that lady: "G d n!
j What you alle time calle me D?"
