SATURDAY. JlfcJE 3, 1876.
A great many people are wonder
ing how much their trip to the Cen
tennial is going to cost. And yet
3'ou'll notice the railroads offer to
carry passengers to Philadelphia,
" without change."
--A New York paper describing a
boat, race, alludes to " the flashing
of 10,000 eyes and the plaudits of
twice as many fair hands." What a
lot of one-eyed women there must
have been at that race !
The other day a Black Hills
stage-driver undertook to horsewhip
his passengers into getting out and
pushing up hill, but the gold seekers
held a Coroner's inquest and iound
that he died of pneamonia.
The California oranges of the
crop of 1875-6 have nearly all been
harvested, The total yield foots up
about 2,771,770. The crop of lemons
will be about 356,710, and that of
limes abofut 128,000.
The future prospects of an im
mense yield of the precious metal
from the Virtue mine, near Baker
City, are daily becoming more flat
tering, andas the prospects brighten,
the general prosperity of the country
also assumes a more cheerful out
look. A Philadelphia paper says: "One
of the afflictions of the Centennial
will be a congress of lawyers, an
nounced to convene in this city on
the 20th of June." Why an afflic
tion, pray? You don't think all the
lawyers in the country are like
" Philadelphia lawyers," do you ?
Mary Louise, daughter of A. J.
and Sarah R. Marshall, of Portland,
died on the 1st. This little sufferer,
aged fourteen, after years of pain, is
at last hi peace more blessed than life
to her, in her cripple condition, the
result of an accident which occurred in
1S68 or 1860 compelling the utmost
care and watclifulness from that day to
this.
The depreciation in stocks in
Wall street last month would doubt
less have caused a financial convul
sion throughout the country in ordi
nary times, but owing to the depres
sion in monetary affairs which has so
long existed there it exerted ?ppar
ently little influence outside of that
locality. It is stated that the ajrgre
gate loss, represented by the change
of prices, is nearly thirty-seven mil
lions on only ten leading stocks, and
many others, less actively handled,
have suffered as much.
Soon after the unfortunate oc
currence of the hreaking of the leg
of Mr. Andy Greigner, in Salem last
Saturday, a lady who has just arrived
in South Salem from Nebraska, saw
the account of the accident in one of
the dailies, and found thtft it was the
'name of her brother, who had come
here rears ago. She had written to
'him several times lately that she was
corning to Oregon this spring, but he
had never received her letters. She
hastened to his room where he lay,
-and there was her brother. Joy
and sorrow were mingled in their
meeting.
We hear the name of Hon. W. D.
Hare, at psent Collector of Customs
at Astoria, strongly urged by many
leading Republicans as a candidate for
the position of Senator in the Congress
of the United States from Oregoiv.
Mr. Hare is a ripe scholar, an honora
ble and an upright gentleman, and he
would be a credit to the people in
that position. No man is better versed
in matters pertaining to the welfare of
ihe State, and it would be a pleasure
to many men of all parties who can
lift their ideas of the people's prosperi
ty above the linestf iariydiction, to
:soe4iini elected.
Drifts and low Heads 1876.
Upper Astoria, Clatsop county. Oregon. 1
April 24. I87l. J
At a Special meeting of the Colum
bia River Fishermens Beneficial Aid
Society, the following regulations for
the government of all concerned
were adopted. That the following
drifts and tow heads be established
for the fishing season of 1S76.
First Drift. From Woody Island
to Brown's point.
Second Drift. From Brown's Point
inside of Snag Island to the 12th red
buo3r.
Third Drift. From the loth buoy
to Tongue Point.
Fourth Drift. From Tongue Point
to a point a little west of Booth's
Cannery, at a place to be designated
by a spile or some permanent mark.
Fifth Drift. From the termina
tion of the 4th drift to Smith's Point.
Sixth Drift. From Smith's Point
to the Pacific Ocean.
Seventh Drift. From the red buoy
in the Prairie channel to Tongue
Point up or down.
Eighth Drift. The big snag in
Chinook shoot will be considered a
tow head.
The fishermen in Astoria, in coun
cil have mutually agreed to bind
themselves to be governed, by the
foregoing drifts, and it is expected
from boats outside of the Society that
they will also conform to the same.

How Advertising Affects Busi
ness. The man who advertises his busi
ness, if what he offers for sale is honestly
what he represents it to be or what it ought
to be, is constantly assisted in his business
by those who have been attracted to him
and tested him. A buj'er has read his
advertisement, and gone to his store or
work shop, "warehouse, whatever it may
be, and tried what was recommended.
If it has satisfied him he is pleased and re
commends it to his neighbor, who is likely
to go to the same place and tell his neigh
bor in turn. And thu little rills started
by his advertisement flow in upon him
from all side, and the current ot his busi
ness grows stronger and wider and more
rapid, and he prospers and grows rich, all
because strict attention in business he
added judicious advertising. But for this
he might have lingered on in the 'commu
nity tor years and his business would
scarcely have been heaid of.
"It Pays to Advkutisk." This is 'true in
every department of business, and nt one ap
preciates its truth more fully than S. H.
Thompson. Some time since ho received tho
Agency, for this county, of tho Cunningham
"(Jarden City Clipper Plow," and immediate
ly advertised the same in our paper. Green
1$. Smith, Ksii.. a patron of the Gazette, saw
the advertisement and forthwith ruSiied to
Thompson's and purchased four of these cele
brated plows which at once have sprung into
popular favor. 2i6 mater how good and valu
able an article may be, a merchant or dealer
may keen it upon his shelves, or in his store
for months, or even years, and but tew will
know anything'of its good qualities, unless ho
advertises. lor years .Mr. Thompson carried
on business hero, and spent but littlo for
adveitising. U ithin the past two years his
business has increased nearly double, and ho
attributes it to .judicious advertising. If you
want to thrive 'in business, advkutisk Cor
cullin Gazette.
Don't 11kd Advkutiskmknts. Occasionally
ji business man is encountered who professes
to believe tlriit" people don't read advertisement.-;
any how !" A greater mistako is sel
dom made. J! a typographical error creeps
into an ad. it soon becomes the talk of tho
ncighborhood, and if tho people do not read
ads. how do they 'drop' on errors with such
facility ? Tho other day tho advertisement of
the Centennial Restaurant appeared, in which
tho word 4 eating" was setup ' fating," whero
upon we were 'duly notified of the error by
seven Salinasitcs and ono Chinaman, and last
ly, the .Monterey Herald felt in duty bound to
notify us also. Daily Jlecorder, Salinas City,
Calilornia.
Take Your Local Paper. A man in Marion
county last week saved $150 by taking his
local papor, tho Mercury, and thoro is a man
in this county, near ttrownsville, who told us,
a hort time ago, that he had mado anfeO-acrc
tract of land by being a reader of tho Demo
crat. Ho had been wanting for a long time to
buy an SO. adjoining his farm, but could getho
track of the owner, who was a non-resident of
the State, and finally saw it advertised for
tax sale in the Democrat, lie attended the
sale and boughtit for a nominal sum. and is
now the owner of it. Albany Democrat.
