"Importing Disease."
Under the above head the San
Francisco papers speak in plain terms
in censure of Capt. Connelly, of the
steamship Colorado, -which arrived
from Hongkong, via Yokohama$ on
the 19th, bringing an addition of
nearly 900 ft the Celestial population
to this Coast. And, as if this in
itself was not bad enough, that dread
ed scourge, the smallpox, had mani
fested itself among the poor coolies
during the voyage, its ravages having
been allayed apparently but a few
days before the vessel reached port.
But notwithstanding this added cir
cumstance to render the arrival an
unwelcome one, the commander
availed himself of the early hour at
which he entered the Golden Gate to
avoid the Health Ofiicer, and disre
garding all the well-known health
regulations of the port, actually took
his vessel with its living cargo of in
fected Chinese to the Pacific "Mail
Company's wharf, thus imperiling the
health of the entire community.
This glaring violation of law and
utter contempt of the health ordi
nances and regulations of the port
were promptlj' reported to the Board
of Health when that body very prop
erly ordered legal proceedings to be
commenced at once against both the
commander of the ship and 'the Pa
cific Mail Company. It is hoped that
these proceedings will be vigorously
prosecuted, and that the utmost pen-
alty will be inflicted. The present j will remain until some proposed im

hailed, but no spasmodic service every
second or third day will answer.

largest flouring mills in the State hav
ing a capacity of sixty tons of freight
per day. A woolen mill, whose
freightage will also count considerable;
the tub factory and the Alden Fruit
Drying Company, all adding their
quota to business, besides the numer
ous extensive orchards between here
and Portland, and the Oswego Iron

streams of commerce, it appears plain
to us that there would be no difficul
ty in sustaining a daily service be
tween here and Portland; the inter
est of our city demands it, and a lit
tle conjoint effort on the part of our
citizens will secure it for us, beyond a

usher in the era of Oregon City re
trocession and decay, unless it is con
fessed that all ambition and enterprise
have died out from among her cit
