SPut Smith, a noted slock man,
wbo has invested largety in blooded sheep
arrived in Oregon again recently and will
make arrangements for distributing here
among bheep owners, of a lot of thorough
bred merino bucks. He will arrive at As
toria with several head of young bucks

you think that people don't like to read
advertisements I If you do you are much
mistaken. Eresh, well-put well-placed ad
vertisements are news ! They are welcomed,
read nay, studied ! The newspaper that is
alive with them is incre:isingly acceptable
and so is the business house that knows how
to get them up, possessed withal with the
sagacity and nerve to keep them up.
"Warning to Delinquent Subscribers. A
Russian paper announces that a belief in the
approaching end of the world has seized on
the Cossacks of tho Don. Many, especially
aged people, are giving up wordly affairs,
wearing a shroud, and ordering their coflins.
On every road are men repairing to Moscow
to be consecrated priests, in order that tho
smallest village may have its own priest and
church. The Russian paper fails to state
whether its delinquent subscribers have taken
tho scare and paid up. That to our mind
would be stronger evidence of the approach of
tho Millennium than any thing that a super
stitious Cossack could advance.

a business man is encountered who professes
to believe that" people don't read advertise
ments any how !" A greater mistake is sel
dom made. If a typographical error creeps
into an ad. it soon becomes the talk of the
neighborhood, and if the people do not read
ads. how do they drop' on errors with such
facility ? The other day tho advertisement of
tho Centennial Restaurant appeared, in which
tho word ' eating" was set up ' fating," where
upon wo were duly notified of the error by
seven Salinasites and one Chinaman, and last
ly, the Monterey lie raid felt in duty bound to

Take Your Local Paper. A man in Marion
county last week saved $150 by taking his
local paper, tho Mercury, and there is a man
in this county, near Brownsville, who told us,
a short time ago, that ho had made anfcO-acre
tract of land by being a reader of the Demo
crat. He had boon wanting for a long time to
buy an SO. adjoining his farm, but could get no
track of the owner, who was a non-resident of
tho State, and finally saw it advertised for
tax sale in tho Demociat. He attended the
sale and bought it for a nominal sum, and is
now the owner o f it. Albany Democrat.
"It Pays to Advertise." This is true in
ever3' department of business, and no ono ap
preciates its truth more fully than S. H.
Thompson. Some time since ho received tho
Agency, for this county, of the Cunningham
''Garden City Clipper Plow," and immediate
ly advertised tho same in our paper. Green
B. Smith, h)sq a patron of tho Gazette, saw
the advertisement and forthwith rushed to
Thompson's and purchased four of these cele
brated plows which at once have sprung into
popular favor. 'o mater how good and valu
able an article may be, a merchant or dealer
may keep it upon his shelves, or in his store
for months, or even years, and but lew will
know anything ot its good qualities, unless ho
advertises, tor years Mr. Thompson carried
on business hero, and spent but little for
advertising. Within the past two years his
business has increased nearly double, and he
attributes it to judicious advertising. Jf you

At a Special meeting of the Colum
bia River Fishermens Beneficial Aid
Society, the following regulations for
the government of all concerned
were adopted. That the following
drifts and tow heads be established
for the fishing season of 187G.
First Drift. From "Woody Island
to Brown's point.
Second Drift. From Brown's Point
inside of Snag Island to the 12th red
buoy.
Third Drift. From the loth buoy
to Tongue Point.
Fourth Drift. From Tongue Point
to a point a little west of Booth's
Cannery, at a place to be designated
by a spile or some permanent mark.
Fifth Drift. From the termina
tion of the 4th drift to Smith's Point.
Sixth Drift. From Smith's Point
to the Pacific Ocean.
Seventh Dj-ift. From the red buoy
in the Prairie channel to Tongue
Point up or down.
Eighth Drift. The big snag in
Chinook shoot will be considered a
tow head.
The fishermen in Astoria, in coun
cil have mutually agreed to bind
themselves to be governed by the
foregoing driTts, and it is expected
from boats outside of the Society that
they will also conform to the same.
Any fisherman who is not fortunate
enough to be a member, of this Society
,bas still another opportunity to join
fihrt Society, by applying before the
J 0th day of May, 1S76, in accordance
.i.tifcfche notice published elsewhere
in the Astoriax. After which time
'tfirc'f initiation fees will be raised to
twieht-five dollars.
