A happy little woman is Mrs. Myra
Olarke Gaines since the last decision
effhe United States Supreme Court
Giving her leave to transfer her im
portant New Orleans cases from the
Si ate to the Federal courts, says a-late
letter from Washington. The former
tribunals have always been prejudiced
against her, while the federal courts
have usually given decisions of the
United States Supreme Court as a sure
omen of her ultimate success. Sirs.
Games is a remarkable woman, con
sidering the troubles through which,
she has passed. Involved for the last
thirtv vears. in never less than a half
a dozen lawsuits at a tune, for prop
erty which she believes to be right
fully hers. It is said that she looks al
most as young to-day as she did twen
ty years ago. Everybody who has
heard of her, (and who has not?)
doubtless imagines her a feeble old
woman; and no one who has ever
seen her says a Washington letter wri
ter would ever suspect that the jaunty
looking little lady with sharp black
eyes, dressed in black silk, and wear
ing bright yellow, curls, with not a
"silver thread among the gold," mov
ing briskly along Pennsylvania Ave
nue, is the veritable plaintiff in the
Gaines suits. Although she is now
nearly seventy, the old lady protests
that she does not wear a wig, and
that her golden curls not onlv never
adorned the poll of any other female,
but that she uses no dye of any kind.
While there are some doubts oji this
point, no one ever had the hardihood
to whisper them in her presence.
Said one of her lawyers to the writer,
the other day, "she's as good a chan
cery lawyer as there is in the United
States. Flxperience has taught her
almost all there is to be learned in
that branch of the law.
Among the distinguished dele
gates to the Grand Lodge I. O. 0. F.
of Oregon now in session in Salem,
we notice the names of Hon. D F.
Drummond, Mayor of Victoria Jas.
D. Robinson, another of the officials
of that city, and II. D. Strove, Secre
tary and acting Governor of Wash
ington Territory.
About the only business in the
country which displays signs of ac
tivity is the production of petroleum.
The Titusville Herald says in regard to
this interest that the number of pro
ducing wells on the 1st instant was
3,G25, an increase of 500 in the num
ber as compared with last year. This
is the largest number of wells ever
known to be in operation at one time
in the whole history of the oil trade.
Eastern Oregon The AstbrJan is
doing more for the interests of Eastern
Oregon than any other paper in the State.

Last week the Fryer process
underwent public test at Grass Val
ley, California. The newspaper
accounts report the. test as satis
factory. But the best proof of its
value will be its general adoption by
the mining interests of California
and the coast. If, as is claimed, the
Fryer process can not only extract
precious metals from rebellious ores,
but save a large percentage in what
formerly went off in the tailings, the
mining men of this coast will not de
lay in bringing it into general use.
The test of practical experience will
settle the question. If it result in all
that is claimed for it, a new era of
prosperity will open. Work will be
recommenced on a large number of
claims which have long been lying
idle, and where hundreds of thou
sands of dollars have been spent in
vain effort to make mining pay.

that Senator MUchell deserves the
thanks of the people of Oregon, Idaho,
and Washington Territory for his op
position to the proposed reduction of
mail services on the Kelton and
Dalles mail route.
The Oregonian (what you may
call it) finds time and space almost
every day to whirl a dirty fling at
Senator Mitchell.
It was the saying of a wise man,
when his attention was called to any
thing that had a smacking of scandle
in it: "I have so much to do that 1 can
not hear it. One-half my time is ta
ken up with mv own lmsinns-v iho.

other half with letting alone that of
my neighbors." How many excellent
opportunities of letting alone other
people's busines are slighted, and the
world is troubled with the interfer
ence of people with what does not
concern them. Neighborhoods are
driven crazy by the reports of idle or

gardless of its truth, or of the injury it
inflicts upon the feelings of others.

smallest village may have its own priest and
church. The ttustian paper fails to state
whether its delinquent subscribers have taken

would be stronger evidence of the approach of
the .Millennium than any thing that a super
stitious Cossack could advance.
Prof. "Watson, of Arm Arbor,
Michigan, reports a new discoverv in
the constellation of Yirgo of a planet
Mtherto unknown, tlie continued ob

ciouds. On tlia 18th he observed it
satisfactorily. It shines like a star of
the eleventh magnitude. The posi
tion is right ascension, 13 hours 29
minutes; declination, 11 deg. and 47
