ASTOBIA, OREGON :
J. C. IREL.A3kI EDITOR
ERIDA.Y May 12, 1S7G.
The Salem Statesman of tlie 6tli
inst. says: " A number of citizens on
the Upper Willamette, -upon learning
that the steamer Alice is to Le laid up,
declare that if Capt. Bell and Doc Mc-
Cully are not furnished with a boat,
they, the people, will build one for
them."
A Paris correspondent says the
interchange of views at Berlin on
Salonica affairs resulted in a collec
tive demand on the part of the
European powers for tho execution
of the murderers, the indemnification
of the families of the victims, a
solemn salute to the French and
German flags by the Turkish authori
ties and guarantees against similar
massacres.
L M. Starr, owner of tho splen
did Puget Sound steamer North Pa
cific, is preparing to rent and repair
her prior to the Fourth of July, and has
opened negotiations with the Oregon
Steam Navigation Company for the
purchase or the charter of a steamer
from here, to take the place of the
North Pacific during the time repairs
are being made. The Annie Stewart
will probably be sold for this purpose,
and will soon leave the Columbia
river trade.
We observe by the Olympia pa
pers that Rev. M. G. Itfann, late of
Clatsop, has recently married Miss
Minnie C. Cooper, late of Portland,
atPuyallup. Mr. Mann is the Su
perintendent of instructions, and has
charge also of the other departments
of industry on the Puyallup Indian
reservation. The bride is spoken of
as having made herself heretofore
very useful in the Christian duties of
her newly wedded husband.
The sublime part of the pro
gramme at the grand opening of the
Centennial exposition on the 10th,
consists in the fact that the particu
lars were read throughout the world,
on the following day, with a minute
ness of detail quite astonishing. The
prayer by Bishop Simpson, which was
stenograpically reported followed by
AVhittiers hymn, the presentation
speech by the President of the Board,
President Grant's proclamation, etc.,
etc., was all sent to Oregon, in the
Press Dispatches, and was published
in the Oreironian vesterdav.
A correspondent of the Oregonian,
writing from Washington under date
of April 27th says : ' ' Enclosed is the
bill granting an extension of time for
the completion of the Northern Pa
tific railroad, it passed the Senate by a
vote of 35 to 18; and yesterday the
House committee on Pacific railroads
unanimously agreed to recommend to
the House that it should pass, and di
rected Gen. Lamar, of Mississippi,
chairman, to report the bill to the
House. This, it is considered, will
secure its passage. As the bill be
comes a law the company will proceed
-to complete the road. The means to
secure this end, the officers of the
company feel confident they can ob
tain. Senator Kelly was before the
House committee at every meeting for
the last three weeks urging its passage,
und making unanswerable arguments
in favor of the bill. Representative
Lane also did good service in the
House, and Senator Mitchell in the
Senate.
The Salem Mercury thus disposes
of the rumor that the 0. S. N. Co.,
has bought U. B. Scott's Independent
line of boats.
"The rumor in. circulation that Capt.
U. B. Seott, of the Independent line,
had sold his boats, the City of Salem
and Ohio to the W. R. T. and C. Co.,
proves to be false. We are informed
that thos 3 boats have always had full
freights eve trip they have made,
and Purser Katch says it will be a long
-time ere the beautiful colors presented
to the City of by the ladies of Salem
will be hauled down, and that beauti
ful boat pass into other hand than the
preseu o owners.
Drifts and Tow Heads 1876.
Upper Astoria, Clatsop county, Oregon.
April 24, 1S70". J
At a Special meeting of the Colum
bia River Fishermens Beneficial Aid
Society, the following regulations for
the government of all concerned
were adopted. That the following
drifts and tow heads be established
for the fishing season of 1S76.
First Drift. From "Woody Island

Second Drift. From Brown's Point
inside of Snag Island to the 12th red
buoy.

cil have mutually agreed to bind

foregoing drifts, and it is expected '
from boats outside of the Society that i
they will also conform to the same.
Any fisherman who is not fortunate

enough to be a member Of this Society I
