ASTORIA, OREGON :
. C. IRELAND XDITOR
THURSDAY .. .Mat 11, 1876.
The report that Tweed has been
in Canada is false.
The river Ottawa overflowed at
Gatenian Point village, doing consid
erable damage to properly. The
whole town is completely sub
merged.
Both houses of Congress have ad
journed over until Friday next. All
legislative business is entirely sus
pended, and the Capital is pretty
generally deserted for the Centennial.
The British consul at Rio Janeiro
reports by telegraph that a mutiny
broke out on the. bark Caswell, of
Swansea, for Queenstown, in latitude
1 south, longitude 31 west All the
officers were murdered by the muti
neers. The News' Rio Grande City spe
cial says: "Diaz lost many of his
troops from fatigue, tliirst and hunger
and some deserted. The country is
barren and is" obliged to take forage
with him. Water also is scarce.
However, Diaz is very sanguine.
No further rioting has occurred
at Barbadoes. Governor Hennessy
telegraphed to the colonial office that
disturbances occurred at Tobago;
cause unknown. A man-of-war had
gone to Tobago. The Earl of Carnar
von, Secretary of State for the colo
nial department, telegraphed for fur
ther particulars.
The Tribune's editorial says the
passage of the Hawaiian treaty bill in
the house "was a surprise to its oppo
nents. Its passage was made possible
by the absence of many members
most interested. The question about
the treaty is whether our own people
or a few planters in the Sandwich Is
lands will profit most by its provisions
and on that point there is room for
wide difference of opinion.
The Mark Lane Express says
there lias been no noticeable change
in the aspect of the country, all vege
tation making slow progress owing to
n. prevalent cod wind. The season
in Scotland is much behind hand ;
iidverce weather caused seeding to be
unusually protracted. In trade in
creased activity has been apparent,
millers buying more freety and specu
lators showing considerable interest
in the present course of prices.
Italian, French and German war
vessels have been ordered to Turkish
waters to settle the disturbances at
Salonica between Christians and
Musselman A correspondent of the
Paris Universelle says the foreign
governments have forwarded the fol
lowing account of the origin of the
disturbance to their Paris legations.
The American consul was at the rail
way station, when his attention was
attracted by the cries of a Christian
girl. She was surrounded by a score
of Musselmans, who wanted to take
her forcibly to the Mosque. The
consul took the girl under his protec
tion. While he was-seeking for in
formation as to her nationuHt', the
German and French consuls were
separately informed that. the woman
belonged to their respective nations
and had been dragged into a Mosque,
where they were beaten to death.
A Paris correspondent learns that the
American consul, fearing that the.
mob would succeed in forcing his
house sent the girl to the German
consni. The mob in the Mosque
compelled the German counsel to
sign an order. for her delivery and
then murdered him. A correspond
ent at Berlin says it is generally
thought that the Salonica affair will
prove fatal to Turkey. Interference
of European powers for the benefit of
Christians is now condered una-
voidable, as it is evident the Porte
is powerless to protect them against
the outbreaks of fuuatics.

first class, and should not bo confounded with
itinerant shows of no merit that at times in
flict themselves upon tho public.
"The general verdict was that tho manager's
promises had been completely fulfilled." San
Joc Mercury.
"The performance was "of tho character in
dicated by the name of tho Troupe light,
mirth provoking, and in many particulars
reaching to use tho languago of the Manager
tho highest standard of Refined art." Port
land Evening Journal.
Last ovening tho celebrated Worell "Sisters
appeared to excellent advantage and their
Songs, Dancing and Sketch acting pleased
immensely, judging from the hearty applause
they won. It is needless to mention the songs
and Dutchisins of Geo. Knight. Ho never
fails to make a "palpable hit" whenever he
appears. To hear him in'his f imous speech
affords enough fun alone to pay for tho price
of admission. Geo. Richards, tho India Kub
ber man. who is as elastic and lithe as a steel
spring, contributed in no small measure to the
enjoyment of the entertainment by his clown
ish antics. Jn his speciality of "Flowy.
Flewy," ho is certainly inimitable. Oregon
