A VAST UNDERTAKING.
The New Panama Transit Company and
its ims.

The Panama Transit Company, the
formation of -which we recently an
nounced, is proving to be a substantial
reality, and threatens to inaugurate a
contest upon two oceans for the com
mand of a world-wide traffic. Of course
the point on which the whole affair
turns, is the Panama Railroad. When
the speculators concerned in the Union
and Central Pacific Railrod monopory
bought up the control of the Pacific
Mail steamship Company for the pur
pose of abolishing competition, they
neglected to buy the Panama Railroad,
fancying tljat with the withdrawal of
the steamships the "railroad would be
obtained when wanted at a mere song.
But instead of this, the railroad w;is
held firmly by shrewd men, who saw
that it was really the key of the whole
situation. When, at length, the mon
opolists saw tliis the'- took out an
injunction to prevent the railroad
company running a through line of
steamers between New York and San
Francisco. The injunction business
is a specialty of the New York courts.
But the consequence was the organ
ization of a new corporation called the
Panama Transit Company, against
which no injunction can work, and to
this company has been transferred all
the business of the companies connect
ing with the Panama Kailroad at Aspin
wall, as well as the local business of
the Isthmus, both hitherto monopolized
by the Pacific Mail steamers, to which
tlity will now be lost. The charter of
the company names so many ports to
be connected by steamers that it is
evident the contest is intended to be
a great one. The only ports named
in the Atlantic in the western hemis
phere arc Havana and Matanzas, in
the island of Cuba. But on the west
coast of South America are named
Callao, Pisco, Islay, Arica, Ico, in
Peru ; Cobiga, in Bolivia ; Copiapo,
Caldera, Coquimbo and Valparaiso, in
Chili, and some other ports which we
cannot fix, from which it is evident that
"the lines running from New York to
Havana, Matanzas and Aspinwall will
connect with lines running along the
'west coast south from Panama to Val
paraiso. No ports arc named in Mexico
or Central America, but San Luis
Obispo and Santa Barbara, in Califor
nia, are named, and Portland, in Ore
gon, Victoria, in British Columbia,
"Sitka, in Alaska, Honolulu, in the
Sandwich Islands, Melbourne and
Sidney, in Australia, Yokohama, Hiogo
and Nagasaki in Japan, the British
Islands of Hong Kong, Shanghai, in
China, Liverpool, London and South
ampton, in England, St. Nazaire and
Havre, in France, and Hamburg in
'Germany.
No statement is made as to how
"these lines are to be run. The European
Jines may be run either direct to and
-from Aspinwall or from New York,
and the Asiatic, Australia and Honol
'ulu lines either direct from Panama or
via San Francisco. To run them all
direct to end from the Isthmus would
require the command of great capital
and a much larger fleet of veseels'than
the Pacific Mail possesses. Neverthe
less such a project is an ultimate pos
sibility. The true basis of trade for
the Panama route does not seem to
have occurred to the projectors of the
Transit Company. We refer to the
business that might be gathered up at
Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and
New Orleans. These cities all maintan
a regular trade with Havana and
Matanzas, to which ports the steamers
of the Transit Company will ply.
'They would also zealously co-operate
in any enterprise looking to the devel
opment -of the South American trade.
The Australian steamship business
--is in the hands of the Pacific Mail
Company, under a subsidy from the
Australian government, and also tlm
lines to Japan, China, Oregon, British
Columbia and Alaska. Nevertheless
the Transit Company has opened the
ball in earnest, the steamship South'
. Carolina having sailed from New York
forP'inama via the Straits of Magellan.

lewill open -the line down the west
coast of South America. Steamers
'will be run -eemi-monthly from New
York to Aspinxrall.to connect with this
line, the first boat leaving New York
-April 7th. The South Carolina has a
-capacity of ilOO tons cargo, one hun
'dred cabin passengers and two hundred
steerage -passengers, and there will be
:five-uch ships on the -lme. JBut the
company is to build .within a year five
new steamers, of 4,000 tons burthen
each, and when they are ready the
trips will be weekly.
Thomas Clyde, of Philadelphia, is
President of the company, and William
P. Clyde, general manager. None of
the stock is for sale. It is idle to spec
ulate upon the probable result of a
contest upon so vast a scale and where
so much is at stake. If both companies
could become permanent and develop
American maritime enterprise as the
Peninsular and Oriental Steamship
Company of England has done,"it woidd
beagood thing for American commerce.
That the result will be to break the
monopoly of the through business
between San Francisco imd New York
we think certain. If the new com pany
shall be conductedupon true mercantile
principles it will be a great aicl to
American commerce with South Amer
ica, Australia and Asia. South Amer
ican trade has been so largely controlled
by British steamship lines that any
effort at American competition is most
desirable.

point, C.P.R., by a mad bull that
had wrecken a freight train which
'blockad up the road. Two men
on me wrecked tram were killed.
The burning of Chinatown,
at Antioch California, on Monday
last, and the driving out of every
last Chinese inhabitant, was based
upon the fact several boys had vis
ited a Chinese house of prostitution
in the den-row, and were in conse
quence under medical treatment.
Not a Chinese tenement was left
standing, and Antioch is now free
from the degraded class.
The autorities at San Francis
co have at last lost faith in prom
ises oi tne Unmese companies, to
care for their paupers, and will
turn the heathens out of the -nest-
'house to-da3r, except where the dis
ease consists ol leprosy. These
will be forced to return to China,
as soon as possible.-
