A correspondent of the Statesman
proposes a remedy for illegal voting ;
a remedy equally fair to both Repub
licans and Democrats ; one wliich will
work no inconvenience to honest men.
The remedy is this :
Let the Legislature pass a law re
quiring every man who desires to vote
to register his name m the precmct m
which he expects to vote at the time
he casts his vote ; let him prove to the
judges of election that he lias paid
his poll and road tax of previous
assessment, by exhibiting a receipt for
the same, unless he is exempt under
statute, and in such case, let him prove
the same by a certificate from the
county court of the county in wliich he
resides. This will, in a manner, com
pel men to comply with the law and
prevent fraud and rascality. I heard
a man saj7- he had lived in Oregon over
twenty years and yet he had never
worked the roads on his own account.
This man was able-bodied .and was
always on hand at elections to cast his
vote.
All There is of it.
-The impeachment trial of Eel-
knap was begun in the Senate on the
17th. When the minutes of the
court of impeachment had been read
by Gorman, Secretary of the Senate,
and the return of the writ served
upon the ex-secretary having been
read, and the sergent-at-arms having
called upon him to answer, Carpenter,
of counsel for the ex-se.cretary, read
and filed a plea denying the jurisdic
tion of the Senate to try Belknap on
the articles of impeachment as he
was not an oflicer of the United States
at the time such articles were found
and presented to the Senate ; that he
has not since been, nor is now an
officer of the United States ; but was
and is & private citizen of the United
States and of the State of Iowa.

until Wednesday, the 19th, to con
sider what replication shall be made
to the plea of Belknap and it was so
ordered by the Senate, and the Sen-
ate as a Court of impeachment ad
journed. And that is all .there is of
it, at this time.

country is imported from the Mediter
ranean countries in fast sailing vessels
constructed on purpose for this trade.

ages. These found a ready market in
all parts of the United States.
The West India fruit trade is also
assuming large proportions; but for
some reason it is even more risky than
the Mediterranean bussiness. The
imports of oranges at New York last
year from the southern islands aggre
gated 22,550,375, of which 40 per
cent, were ruined on the passage.
Some times whole cargoes are found
.to be entirely worthless. One steam
er load of 72,000 oranges from San
Ann's Bay was a total loss last season.
The quantity of banannas disposed of
annually in the United States may be
judged from the fact that 123 cargoes,
valued at 315,207, were imported at
New York in 1S75. Pine-apples are
also brought from the West Indies by
the shrp load, 97 cargoes have been
sold at New York during the past sea
son. The fruit business with sev
eral of the West India Islands is in
creasing rapidly, giving enrploymcnt
to quite a fleet of steamers.

picked while green and hurried for
ward as rapidly :is possible. If it is
allowed to hang on the trees too long,
or is plucked too soon, the chances of.

great. Should the vessel be unex

But the fruit-dealers usually charge
enough on the good fruit to make up

shrinkage and other loss.

At a Special 'meeting of the Colum
bia River Fishermens Benencial'Aid
Society, the following regulations for
the government of all concerned
were adopted. That the following
drifts and tow heads be established
for the fishing season of 1S7G.
First Drift." From Woody Island
to Brown's point.
Second Drift. From Brown's Point
inside of Snag Island to the 12th red
buoy.
Third Drift. From the loth buoy
to .Tongue Point.
Fourth Drift. From Tongue Point
to a point a little west of Booth's
Cannery, at a place to be designated
by a spile or some permanent nnfrk.
J ifth Drilt. iM'oiu the termina-
tion of the 4th drift to Smith's Point.
Sixth Drift. From Smith's Point
to the Pacific Ocean.
Seventh Drift. From the red buoy
in the Prairie channel to Tongue
Point up or down.
Eighth Drift. The big snag in
Chinook shoot will be considered a

Any fisherman who is not fortunate
enough to be a member of this Society
has still another opportunity to join
this Society, bv applving before the
s 10th day of May, 1S70, in accordance
with the notice published elsewhere
in the Astoijiax. After which time
the initiation fees will be raised to
twenty-five dollars.
