Jan. 11, British bark Prof. Airy, for Queens
town, with 13,72i centals wheat $27,4515. This
vessel took out a portion of her cargo, and
lightered over tho shoals and then put it back
again. Her master represents a company who
own seventy ships. W hat kind of a report
may be expected from him? concerning navi
gation of the Columbia river to Portland.

Some Things Wanted.
Oregon's Xiosses.
The farmer of Oregon gets $40 per ton for Lis
Wheat, and the earners get about $23 per ton
for the same. But the ships are not owned in
the State hence Oregon's loss on WHEAT is
$2 o per ton.
The furnishers" of Stave-bolts receive about
S'J per cord, and the ship $ 10 per cord. Tho
ships not being owned in Oregon $10 per cord
on STAVE-BOLTS arc lost to the State.
So, also, with PISH and LUMBER, etc., ex
ported from the Columbia river, the transpor
tation of which is lost to the State.

To save these large sums to the State of Ore
gon. Ships arc valuable, and this State pro
duces the best of lumber, spars and iron, for

near the mills, where it can be done cheaply.
An Independent Steaniboat Co.
Is Wanted on the Columbia river and tribu
taries, to carry the products of Oregon to the
sea board, where deep vessels may load with
dispatch.
It is reported that tho Columbia and Wal
lamot (river) Steamboat Companies have an
understanding, a mutual agreement, to limit
their routes and preserve a monopoly. The
farmers on -tho upper Wallamet cannot get
their grain carried to the ship awaiting cargo
in tho Columbia river without paying two
or three companies, and having the grain rc-
handled before reaching the ships.
The boat
loaded 'at Salem should proceed-directly to
the ocean vessel in Astoria harbor, below all
obstructions, but instead of this she stops 12
miles below the Summer mouth, and 30 miles
from the Winter month of the Walkunct, and
passes the grain, (wharf charged,) over to an
other boat of different owners to carry to the
Columbia river.
Farmers; Citizens of Oregon; wc appeal to
you! Look to this matter of transportation!
See the large sums the State is continuously
deprived of, by the extravagant method of
shipping which benefits only the wharves at
Portland, and enriches the steamboat compa
nies. It is this kind of business that enables
shippers to give California farmers this year
