Dl asKHacxxtacxsczs r&nzKCCEacaaezE Tri-Weckly Astorian ASTOHIA. J ax. 3, 1S74 The )rice of sea-island cotton grown in Fiji lias" fallen so low that snme of the cotton planters there have been obliged to give up its cul tivation. The sales made in London range for best samples from 1 2d to 20d, and for second quality from 9d to lid, per pound. As it costs lod to grow the article and lay it down in London, there can be no profit in its cultivation at present prices. Sea Lsland Cotton in seed sold in August in Fiji for o cents a pound, at which price little will be produced. The European market is over stocked with the large quantities now raised in America and elsewhere. A correspondent of theOregoni an, writing from Coos bay, growls at Californians for coming up there and building ships of Oregon materials, then labelling them "San Francisco" sail away without even paying taxes. Jfe shows that that species of ship building only impoverishes .this state, as the public domain is being stripped of its timber uiider the stumpage act, and when Or gon gels the land from the general Govern ment it will be unsaleable. The subject has some new points of inter est, and is worthy of careful consid eration. The German Gazette of Vienna estimates the deficit of the Vienna Exhibition at from 12,000,000 to 14, 000,000 of florins. The Pacific Mail Company has met another loss in the wrecking of the steamer Ariel, which plied be tween ports in Japan. 'ff!Jc TnMe for Astoria. (From table of United States Coast Survey.) The furiiicrof Oregon gets $40 per ton for his Wheat, iind the carriers get about S'-M per ton for the same. But the ships are not owned in t the State hence Oregon's loss on WHEAT is ?2" per ton. The furnishers of Stave-bolts receive about j $ii per cord, and the ship $10 per cord. The ships not being owned in Oregon $10 per cord on STAVE-DOLTS aro lost to tho State. So, alo, with FISH and LUMBER, etc., ex ported from the Columbia river,-the transpor tation of which is lost to tho State. Ship Owners "Wanted. To save these large sums to the State of Ore gon. Ships aro valuable, and this State pro duces the best of lumber, spars and iron, for SHIP BUJLD1XG. Ship Yards Wanted. On the Columbia river, to retain at home the expenses of ship building. To build vessels near the mills, where it can be done cheaply. An Independent Steainboat Co. Is Wanted on the Columbia river and tribu taries, to carry tho products of Oregon to the sea board, where deep vessels may load with dirpatch. Lt is reported that tho Columbia and Wal lamet (river) Steamboat Companies have an understanding, a mutual agreement, to limit their routes and preserve a monopoly. The farmers on the upper Walla met cannot get their grain carried to the ship awaiting cargo in tho Columbia river without paying two or three companies, and having the grain re handled before reaching the ships. The boat loaded at Salem should proceed directly to the ocean vessel in Astoria harbor, below all obstructions, but instead of this she stops 12 miles below the Summer mouth, nnd"0 miles from the Winter mouth of the Wallamct, and passes tho grain, (wharf charged,) over to an other boat of different owners to carry to the Columbia river. Farmers; Citizens of Oregon; avc appeal to you! Look to this matter of transportation! Seethe large sums the State is continuously deprived of, by the extravagant method of shipping which benefits only the wharves at i'oi tland, and enriches the steamboat compa nies. It i$ this kind of business that enables shippers to give California farmers this year Thirty-one Gents per Bnsliel More than the Oregon farmer receives for his wheat. Bead, reflect, understand the facts then act for yourselves. tr Newspapers friendly to the best inter est of Oregon aro requested to copy. (Signedj, MAXY OBEGOXIAXS. CLEARANCES AXD DEPARTURES.
