The States man says: "Salem's carnival sea son is come when Winter touches the slough and chills its surface to a solid glare; then the young men and matrons can be seen rushing through our streets keeping time to jingling skates, all pointing to the carnival ground to join in the eager sport which doubles in zest because Winter so seldom becomes a local fixture. Our folks are not premium skaters, all of them, not having sufficient opportunity for practice, but occasionally there is one who takes as naturally to ice as a duck to water, and some among- us have wintered where ice "was not such a luxury, so there al ways can be seen graceful skating when opportunity oilers. It is notic able that the ladies' figure pleasantly in our ice carnivals, and many of them can rank asfitic performers". Of an afternoon the scene is animated and engrossing beyond description, una tJio evening is irequently made to yield its full tribute by means of log fires, built along the shores, which illuminate the field of ice and lend something of additional enchantment to the scene. During this merry sea son mishaps are cause for mirth, bro ken heads and shattered skates are nothing serious, and a cold plunge below is an unexpected opening for fun." The picture is very similar to that presented about Astoria, but here the addition of music upon stringed instruments, enlivening the season while it lasted for the youngsters and many of the oldsters, for that matter, must be taken in connection with the skating. A family consisting of a widow mother, three sons and two daugh ters, were all married at once in Cincinnati last month. The Price of Gold.
