H V Tri-Weekly Astorian ASTORIA. Dec. 1C, 1873 A Distinguished Gentleman from Oregon Under this caption the San Francisco Bulletin of the 4th has the follewing: Some little commotion -was created at the Occidental Hotel, last evening, by the eccentric conduct of a conse quential guest, who arrived by the last steamer from Oregon, who reg istered as J. Mortimer Jturphy, and pretended to be a representative of the Portland Bulletin. The ostenta tious gentleman, after establishing his title to distinguished considera tion in the usual manner of the class to which he belongs, started out on a carouse, and returning at a late hour on Tuesday night, endeavored to swindle the hotel clerk out of a do nation, on the pretense that he had a large sum deposited in the safe. The game did not work, notwith standing the deep indignation of this high-toned fellow at the request of a loan, and when the attempted swin dle was reported at headquarters a watch was kept on the movements of T. Mortimer Murphy. The elegant Oregonian was on the point of sneak ing out of the private entrance of the hotel last evening, with his bag gage under his arm, when he was intercepted by the clerk and a bill of $o thrust under his nose. J. Morti mer Murphy would have wafted the sordid money taker to one side in his offended dignity, but just then the manager of the hotel appeared upon the scene to enforce the de inand. Murphy proposed lighting his way through, and made a motion to strike the manager, when the lat ter drew a pistol and fired at him, but without effect. Murphy then drew ofi and an excited crowd drew in about the hotel, to inquire the cause of the disturbance- While the discussion of the affair was pro ceeding, the Oregonian returned, se cured liis baggage by paying the coveted bill, and then drew out a navy revolver and inquired earnestly for the man who shot at him, but nothing further happened. Sir. Murphy applied for a warrant to-day, and more of the trouble will prob ably be heard in the Police Court. An exchange says that "the whole country is filled with burning indignation at the fiendish barbari ty of the Spaniards." That will ex plain the cold snap in this part of the whole country which is not filled with any u burning" indignation, hence leaves the gate open for all the surplus cold to come in from other parts where this " burning" indigna tion makes it too tropical for ice blockades- It must be serene also, on the Spanish question, along the Erie Canal. A recent English writer says that drunkenness is an affair of climate. The people of all damp and cold countries are apt to drink more than is good for them; and a geographer might divide a map of the world in to "temperate" and "intemperate" zones. ASTORIA MARKETS.
