Portland, Dec. S. Gold in New York to-day, 109; Portland Legal Tender rates, 90 buying, and 91 selling. Nine vessels from Coos bay arriv ed at San Francisco in one day. The schooner Hera from Astoria, arrived the same day. "Western men have concluded hereafter to be more careful in com mitting their interests to the care of "Wall street financiers. The Italian government has pur chased from Madamae Eattazzi the papers left by her late husband, in order to prevent their publication. When a legislator goes to his home with, an agency to act for some Railroad or other corporation, people are quizzical and want to know whys and wherefores just as if it was their business. There are only $295,000 asked for by the .Secretary of "War to com plete the fortifications about San Francisco; or, to speak more corectly, that is the amount which he deems it expedient to expend on them dur ing the next year, The timber cut and remov ed under a permit issued by authority of the agent of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company, will bring the question before the Courts as to the right of the Railroad Company to sell timber from Government lands. The Sacramento Union, in an ticipation of the pressure which will be brought to bear upon members of the Legislature, suggests that Far mers' Granges, and other interests, shall send representatives to Sacra mento to assist in securing beneficial legislation, as well as the election of a "United States Senator. The new Postoflice at New York, for the construction of which the Government has appropriated $7, 500,000, will be ready for the occu pants by the 4th of July. No wood is to be used in its construction; gran ite, iron and brick, being the princi pal materials; 1-1,000,000 brick have alreadv been used in it. Great results in the way of rev enue to Chili are expected from the discovery of a vast deposit of guano, extending for miles in a plain which terminates at the foot of a range of hills, about forty miles from Anto fagosta. It is covered by a crystal line crust, which, has to be broken through. Germany has finally decided on practically testing the proposition of abolishing telegraph poles by bury ing all the wires in the earth. Tubes are to be laid in shallow trenches, . and through these wires are to run. If the project proves a successful one it will, no doubt, meet with a uni versal adoption. A Sixitrrr. " How do you do, Mrs. Toise? Have you heard that story .aboatMrs, Ludy?" "Why, no, real ly, Mrs. Gad; what is it do tell?" 0, 1 promised not to tell it, for all the -vvorici! xo, x must never lit -v-1 tell t. I'm afraid it'll ijrit out!" never tell on :iS true as the cio tell!" "Now, you won't say any thing: about it, will 3011?" ' No, I'll never open fny head about it, never; J liope to die this minit, if I do!" 11 Weil, then, if you'll believe me, Mrs. Fundy told me last night, that Mrs. Trot told her that her sister's brother's first wife's father's grand mother was told by a person who had dreamed it, that Mrs. Trouble's oldest daughter told Mrs. Nichens that her grandmother heard by a letter she got from her third sister's second husband's eldest brother's step daughter, that it was reported by the captain of a clam-boat just arriv ed from the Eeejee Islands, that the Mermaids about that section wore shark-skin bustles stufied with pickled-eels toes."
