64 J I I I 1 " , ... Tri-Weekly Astorian ASTOKIA Dec G, 1873 AUTUMN FLOWERS. Written for the Tri-Wkkkly Astorian. Wo love the bright, brave Autumn flowers That cheer these sobre days. They struggle out with all their powers, To speak their Maker's praise; They come without tho gcntlo shower, Or coaxing Summer sun; And still smile on, 'though Heavens lower, before their course they've run. Though the chilling winds sweep o'er their home, In many a fitful gust, They crown each stem with a flow'ry domo, Ne'er trail them in tho dust, But look more perfect, lovely and pure, After each biting blast, And socm to say: All thing? I endure. To make my brightness last- Th esc tender flowers teach lessons brave, To many a thoughtful mind; "When cares and trials our pathway pave, And naught seems true or kind; "When cv'ry duty becomes a Cross "Which wo are forced to bear. And all our lives aro filled with dross Of discontent, and care; Then should we, with pationco untiring Gather our burdens up. Still on our Redeemer relying, Drink of the bitter cup. "Wo then shall taste of poaco onduring, Coniuering all our fears; In the joy of His love rejoicing, E'en smiling through our tears. . Seljlh. SUXD.1Y READING The first nautical person alluded to in the Scriptures is said to be Eve, because she was first mate. A man can do without his own ap probation in much society, but he make great evcrtions to gain it when lie lives alone. The real wants of nature are the measure of enjoyment, as the foot is -the measure of the shoii. We can call only the want of what is neces sary, poverty. The Baptists have no less than ten churches in Atlantic, Ga., three of which are colored churches. One of the colored churches numbers 1,000 communicants. There are more Jews. in New York I than in Jerusalem, and more than in any other city in the world, and there are more Catholics there than in the city of Home. A man sought to annoy a boy whom lie found at work by the roiuUideand finally asked him who his lather and mother were, to which the boy replied, "they are the parents of a bon who knows how to practice the wie precepts of King Solo mon, by answering a fool according to his lolly." "What a conglomeration of religious bodies a great city is, is clearly illus trated by the latest statistics of Paris, which, it seems, contains l,732,52y Catholics, 30,421 Israelites, 17,251 Calvinists, 14,940 Lutherans, !),S42 Anglican, Methodists and Quakers, 422 Mohammedans, Buddhists and Brahmins, 2,500 persons who declar ed that they belonged to no religious ect, and two only who were Free thinkers. Laughter is one of the gifts which distinguish men from animals. Mirth, so far from being one of the lower attributes of huinan nature, is one of the higher. It reigns in an innocent nature, and tends to perfect and brighten the mind wherever al lowed. It may be said of this emo tion as quaint Andrew Fuller said of anger, l- He would it hath a maimed mind." A crumpled little package was re cently received at the Mayor's office in Memphis which contained five dollars and five cents, nearly all in one, two, three and five cent pieces. On the inner wrap;ing was written 11 Little Lilly's money, to go to a poor child;" on the outer paper in a differ ent hand were the words, " From lit tle Lilly, for the M emphis sufferers a dying bequest." A newspaper correspondent has discovered a new solution of Mormon difficulties. He says that the waters of Salt Lake have been rising for years, and are now twenty feet high er than they used to be. They are moreover inclosed" by a ridge far above the doomed city of the plain, and sooner or later the imprisoned waters will break out and engulf the modern Sodom and settle the Mor mon question forever. A Tennessee preacher announced to his congregation on a recent Sun day, that a prayer meeting would be held in the church in behalf of the Memphis sufferers, and exhorted his congregation to put on sack-cloth and ashes for the solemn occasion. One sister accordingly procured a lot of old coffee sacks, worked them into a well-fitting dress, sprinkled said unique dress profusely with ashes, and when the day of prayer arrived put it on and started for the house of God. She was stopped bv her mis tress, who had considerable difficulty in explaining to ner cue rem mean ing of the minister. Meteorological Report Hours of Observation 7 a, m. 2 and 9 i m. Jy Louis ilon.
