I IIATE A JEOO&. !
I hate a fool like pizen,
Bad-as I hate a thief,
And hate a liar, for they all
Bring other folks to grief;
I hate a noseing gossip,
"Whose nabty prying snout
Pokes inter peoples business,
To ferret bii'thin? out.
I hate their pizen scandal,
N"o matter how it's fixed
"With guesses, lies and heresays
Benevolently miied,
And dealt out free as water
In long .November rains
And may the king of brimstone
Bewrd 'em for their pains.
I s.lkn-5 hate a, drunkard,
A loafer, and a fop;
And hate a kid-glove dandy,
"Whobe brains are soft as pop;
I hate deceit and fawning, .
And hate like all possessed
A snarling, jawing temper
That gives nobody rest.
Old Experience.
OUR SPIGERY.
The Home Circuit Walking
about with a baby in the night.
"Bedad, I never was in a coun
try before where they had so much
land that they had to stack it," is
the remark ijnputed to a son of Ire
.ind after he had inspected the nu
merous hills and mountain-ranges of
Oregon.
An unsophisticated farmer when
asked by the paying teller of a bank
what denomination he would have
his bills in, replied. "You- may
give me a sprinklin of Presbyterian,
but the heft on 'era I'll take in good
old Hard-shell Baptist."
The total absence of boot-jacks,
pomatum pots, and other household
missiles in the remains of Swiss lac
ustrine villages leads Dr. Hartmann
the celebrated ethnologist, to the
conclusion that the domestic cat was
unknown to pre-historic man.
- You ought to let me pass here
free of charge, considering the be
nevolent nature of my profession,"
said a physician to a toll-gate keeper.
" Not so," was the reply, " you send
too many dead-heads through here
jiow." The doctor did not stop to
argue the point, but paid his toll and
passed on.
The caution of the New England
er in giving an answer to a direct
question was illustrated the other
day, when a man asked an. Eastern
friend whose family were not noted
for very active habits. " Was not
your father's death very sudden?"
Slowly drawing one hand from his
pocket, and pulling down his beard,
the interrogated cautiously replied,
" Waal, rather sudden, for him."-
An absent-minded smoker nam
ed Yancy undertook to wbisper some
thing of importance in the ear of old
Mr. .Reynolds, Saturday, but in his
absent-mindedness' neglected to re
move his cigar, the fire end of which
was driven right into, the old gentle
man's ear. Mr. Reynolds jumped
htraiglit up in. the air about six feet,
and on coming down split Yancys
nose by a well directed blow, Yancy
picked himself up, and smarted for
home, declaring in a rage that he'd
not tell old Reynolds what he was
going to.

pathetic tale of a poor widow in deep
destitution and distress in that city,
who twenty years ago was a famous
actress invLondon and in the English
provinces, and became the wife of
Jx)rd Denbigh, and afterward of
somebody else. The enthusiastic
newspaper man says she still. " pre-J

possibly live in Kansas City and do
that.
Andrew Jackson was once mak
ing a stump speech in a country vil
lage out West. Just as he was con
cluding, Amos Kendall, who sat be
bide him, whispered, "Tip 'em a lit
tle Latin, General, they won't be
satisfied without it." The " hero of
New Orleans" instantly thought of a
phrase he knew, and, in a voice of
thunder, wound up his speech by
exclaiming: " E pluribus unum, Sine
qua non, Ne plus ultra, Multum in
parvo." The effect was tremendous,
ami the shouts could be heard for
miles,
