6?J rLiwJK.yju Tri-Weekly Astorian ASTOKIA, OREGON: I. C. IRELAND Editor, TUESDAY Nov. 11, 1873 Two women will occupy seats in the Wyoming Legislature. The apple crop of Lagrange county, Ind., is immense. There will be from 50,000 to 75,000 'barrels to spare. Four cotton factories in Fayette ville, N. C, pay dividends of 12 per cent, and upwards. A call has been issued for a Na tional Colored Convention, to be held in "Washington, D. C, on the 8th of December. From Halifax to San Francisco, 4,196 miles, in eight days, is possible since the completion of the Provinc ial Intercolonial railway. A meeting of the surgeons "who served in the Confederate army has been called, to take place at Atlanta on the 20th of May next year. A patent fire-escape killed four men in Montreal, the other day, and there wasn't any fire either, they were only experimenting with the thing. There are said to be five vacancies in the House of Representatives, caused by the death of members elect, since the adjournment of Con gress last March. A suit is pending in Chicago to re cover sixty acres of land given twelve years ago to secure a gambl ing debt of $1,700. The land is now worth $60,000 or $S0,000. The city of Duluth has just com pleted a school census, from which it appears that the whole number of persons in the city between the ages of 5 and 21 is 767372 boys and 395 ffirls. The first Kuklux trial in the North Carolina in a State Court has resulted in the conviction of two men for murder September 6th, and the sen tence to be hung November 13th. Leather made from the skin of the white whale is now a regular article of manufacture at some of the villa ges in Canada. It is both fine and durable, and shoe thongs made of it are said never to break. After taking a drink of carbolic acid, mistaking it for brandy, the other day, Mr. Clapp, of Kenosha, "Wis., threw his arms around his wife's neck and died in two minutes. It required a lever to free the woman from his embrace. Portland, Indiana, has a grain as sociation which has resulted very beneficially to the farmers, adding ten cents a bushel to the price of every bushel of wheat marketed. It is to bn made a permanent joint stock arrangement. Bazaine is blamed for using only one million of the seventeen million cartridge placed at his disposal in Metz. The Humane Society ought to subscribe to his defense fund. A Montreal paper relates an in cident which recently occurred in that city, in which a Newfoundland dog, attacked by a bull dog, drowned "his antagonist. The contest took place on the banks of the canal, and before the two could be separated, they rolled over the wharf into the water, where they continued the combat till the Newfoundler succeed ed in drowning the other. It is said the Northern Pacific Railroad charter is to be turned over to the general Government. There is "speculation" in it. Of course thereto will be added the millions which Jay Cooke & Co. owe, and the Government is to assume. They wjll thereby be entirely relieved, it is claimed, from all liabilities, and Uncle ftim will satisfy their angry Kixl indignant creditors. The story nmy be a UttJe atrens: just now, but prvbl?ly ha foundation. IiETTER FROM SALEM. Salkm, November 3d, 1S73. Editor Asterian: 9 There is not much going on in this corner of the universe since the week of the State Fair, when the pouring rain dampened the ardor of exhibit ors, and blighted the prospects of the managers of the State Agricultural Society, and caused what in the be ginning was prospectively the most successful exhibition of the indus trial resources of Oregon, to end as a partial failure, for lack of visitors. We have had no more rain as yet, in the- fields. TJ,n !,,.., 1... .-u:.ii: through" in preparation for another crop, while the wagons, loaded with wheat, are still pouring into the local gathering points. I accosted a friend to-day who resides in Howell prairie, one of the best wheat raising districts of Marion county, who said he tho't one-third of the crop had not yet been hauled from that point. I pre sume that district is not far from a fair representative of the proportion of the crop that has left other farms. I see by the papers that Mr. A. G. Kinney of this city has been paying Astoria a visit in search of storage room for flour, for exporting directly foreign from his excellent Salem Mills. It seems a pity that your Far mer Companys' wharf and warehouse and three or four more such, was not finished a month ago. "Were it so, the question of the economic value of the ''Farmers' Movement" would soon be placed beyond a doubt. But patience; the world moves; and we progress with it. This last fact I will demonstrate with an incident: On last Thursday a young Astorian, Mr. R. N. Carnahan, succeeded in making the trip from Astoria to Salem in one day. "How did this happen?" some 6ne will ask. Such a catastro phy as an individual coming past Portland without so much as paying tribute to the emporium, to the value of supper, lodging and breakfast how can such crime against the prosperity of the metropolis be committed, and who is this criminal? Of course there was a woman concerned in it, and it happened in this way. The Astoria steamer had taken on some lady pas sengers at Kalama, in whom some one of the officers of the steamer was so much interested as to let them off at the East Portland depot, before putting the boat up to her beth, and observing the engine of the Evening Express Train for Salem snorting for a start, Newt, concluded to defer his visit to Portland, where he had no business, and come on to Salem, the object of his journey. Now, Mr. Editor, I don't wish to get any of the subordinate officers of the Oregon Steam Navigation Compa ny into trouble. It becomes them to be courteous, especially to ladies, and I cannot think it a great crime, even incidentally, to aid travelers to jour ney with dispatch, when they willing ly pay for being carried forward with unnecessary delay. Great improvement sometimes re sult from slight incidents, and this may be the means of showing the Company that they can, if they will, so time the boat on the Astoria and Portland route as to enable the pas senger whose destination is Salem to attain that point eighteen hours soon er than is now usual. There is a say ing that "time is money." We, up here have found out, by experience, that money gets scarce" occasionally, and have very generally concluded that it is worth .saving when it is plenty. If so, eighteen hours of the time (money or its equivalent), which is usually consumed in coming from Astoria to Salem, is worth saving. It is quite true that the writer of this has many a time thought he was getting along with dispatch if he made the trip in a week and a half; but that was about the times when the'iate Capt. Couch would take perhaps a month and a half to sail the good old brig Chenamus up to where he and Mr. Pettigrove located the emporium of Oregon, from the circumstance of which location we have fallen into the hateful habit of thinking that we must stop ourselves, our goods, and everything else that passes Portland. Still the world moves, and we move with it, and as I have lived to see the trip from Astoria to Salem, a distance of 150 miles by river and railroad, made in one day, I am not without hope that I may live to see live Asto rians some day come to Salem for dinner, and return home for supper, on the same day. OLD SETTLEK. Carl Schurz intends to remove from Misbouri to Chicago after the expiration of his present term in Congress; that he seeks a new field of operations, and is fav orably impressed with what Chicago offers as an inducement. Schurz, has undoubt edly lost his grip .in Missouri, to some ex tent, and can hardly hope for a re-election to the United States Senate. He is an honest man, above all the stealings and dishonest dealings common with great men, rather, but he is too independent to train in the ranks of any party. An Illinois circuit court has awarded one hundred and thirty dollars damages to a young lady who was forcibly expelled from a high school, for refusing to study one of the prescribed branches.
