Tri-Weekly Astorian
SATURDAY Oct. 11, 1S73
Republican Platform.
Adopted ix the State Convention,
Axi3ANy, Sept. 11, 1S73.
1. That we look with prido and satisfaction
upon the peaceful an'd prosperous condition of
our country as tho natural result of the appli
cation of the principles controlling theJKepub
lican party to tho administration of .National
atfairs; and that wo reaffirm tho principles of
the party as heretofore enunciated in its Con
vention", and declare that their practical en
forcement is essential to tho welfare of the
country, and the maintenance of the rights and
liberties of tho people.
2. That the Chief Executive of the Nation
has our unabated and unqualified confidence,
in his integrity, ability, and enlightened patri
otism, in tho administration of tho duties of
his high office.
tf. That wo point tho discordant and chaotic
political elements which oppose thcKcpublicaji
3arty to-day, to the grand advances made by
our Government in its political standing, finan
cial credit, commercial importance, and tho
material development of tho resources of the
whole country, as the direct, natural and inev
itable result of tho enlightened policy and
principles of tho Republican party.
4. That wo denounce the recent Act of Con
prcs known as tho Back Pay Rill, and the vot
ing for, or receiving increased pay for services
already rendered.
5. That wo denounce all Credit Mobilier
transactions, whatever their form, and we
heartily approve of tho action of the late Con
gress in exposing and punishing official cor
ruption. 0. That we favor retrenchment and reform
and rigid economy in tho expenditure of the
public money in the State and National ad
ministration, and the reduction of taxation as
rapidly as consistent with good government
and the maintenance of tho public credit.
7. That wo cordially welcome to our shores
the oppressed of all countries, and remember
ing that our adopted fellow citizens have al
ways proved loyal to tho flag of the Republic,
we demand for them the fullest protection of
the laws, and favor increased facilities for nat
uralisation; bin we condemn thecoolio trade,
and all forms of involuntary servitude, and
affirm that the safety and perpetuity of free
institutions demand more stringent laws to
prevent such traffic.
S. That tho interests of this State demand,
and its commercial relations with the other
States of tho Union, both present and prospec
tive, will warrant, a liberal expenditure on tho
part of our National Government in the im
provement of our harbors and river channels,
and it is true policy of our people that they
should bo so represented in Congress as shall
tho most effectually accomplish this result.
!. That the true economy of the management
of the public lands of the United States, as well
as the settlement of our vast domain and the
development of its resources, demand liberal
grants of public land to aid in tho construction
of railroads and other public works, with such
limitations and restrictions as will secure their
ultimato sale to actual settlers.
1'). That wo arc in favor of Congressional
grants of tho Public lands to aid in the con
traction of a railroad from Portland, Oregon,
to 'oiiio point of junction with the Central or
Union Pacific Railroads in Salt Lake valley;
of a railroad from tho Rogue River valley to A
junction with the Contral Pacific in the Hum
boldt valley, and tho extension of the Oregon
and California Railroad to connect with tho
California and Oregon railroad, tho completion
of tho Oregon Central Railroad to Astoria;
to aid in the building a canal and locks around
the Cascades and Dalles of tho Columbia river
and that wo are in favor of an appropriation
by Congress for tho survey and examination
thereof.
11. That tho intorosts of commerce demand
the constrction of a breakwater at Port Orford
in this State, and an appropriation by Congress
for that purpose,
12. That tho protection of tho commerce of
the Columbia river demands the placing of a
steam revenue cuttor, with all necessary appli
ances, at tho mouth of said river.
1 . That the producirg, commercial and in
dustrial interests of tho country should have
tho best and cheapest modes of transportation
i posible; and while capital invested in such
means of transit should have a reasonable re
muneration, these interests should be fully pro
tected, and tho facilities for transportation
should bo adjusted, so far sis possible, to the
want3 of ovory part of the State, with no un
just discrimination as to any section, person or
class; and that as capital and labor arc insep
arably connected, and mutually dependant.the
resource5 of tho Stato will bo best developed,
and tee best interests of all classes promoted,
bv mutual concessions and accommodations
between the producer and the carrier.
11. That wo are opposed to tho setting apart
of tho illowa valley for an Indian reserva
tion, and the candidate of this convention is
hereby pledged to use his inlluonco to securo
to white settlers tho lands in said v.alley ; that
the Modoc murderers of eituons on Lost rive
and Tulo lake, in November hist, should at
once be delivered to the civil authorities of
this Stato, so that they may bo dealt with ac
cording to law; that wo aro in favor of a hu
mane pence policy towards peaceable Indians,
but that full and complete protection should
at all times bo given to settlers on our frontier,
against tho degradations of hostile and refrac
tory Jndians.
