Id Tri-WeeMy Astorian ASTORIA, OREGON: I. C. TKEIsXSJD Editor. SATURDAY. Oct. 11, 1873 General Eaton, now in the Paymaster General's office in "Washington, will, if rumor prove true, he assigned to duty in this department. There are forty-four Granges of the Patrons of Husbandry in. Oregon and "Washington territory. J)aniel Clark of Salem, is master of the State Grange. Among the papers placed in the seal ed "box of the Capitol corner stone on the Stli was a Boston paper printed February 11th, 1723. It was contributed hy Ir. B. G. Whitehouse of Portland. Celeman'b Celehrated iMustard and the National Yeast Cakes, are among the recent receipts at J. "W. Gearhart's, on Chenamus street. 3Ir. Gearhart is add ing to his stock hy the arrival of every Reamer. In the Journal of the Proceedings of the 2Ut Annual Convocation of the Prot ectant Episcopal Church in Oregon and "Washington territory which assemhlcd in Portland on the 29th and 30th of Au gust last, we find the following statistics : Number of "baptisms, adults, 3S infants, 157; number of peions confirmed, S2; numher of communicants added during the year, 12G ; total numher of communi cants, G10 ; number of Sunday school wjholars, 719; marriages, 41; total amount oi money laired for various ohjects dur ing the year, 35,S75. ' , Hon. A. B. Mcacham's "lecture" on the 3Lodoc troubles at Mercantile Library, San PiancUco, is reported in the Bulletin of Octoher 3d. "We observe that the chairman of the Peace Commission takes Ihe ground that Ben "Wright " acted with a traachery equalling thafof Capt. Jack," in wliich we think the Hon. lecturer is at lault. There arc but few apologists in Oregon at this day for any of the murder ous outlaws lately executed at Port Klamath. The public sehool at Port Stevens closed last week. The examination day convinced all of the parents and friends that the children under the instruction of Mrs. Church had made unusual progress. An examination was given at the close of Ihe school which would have done credit io a much larger place. The hall was instefuily decorated by the soldiers at the Fort. The recitations and singinj: bthe children awakened both admiration and Mirpiise. A Washington letter says the annual repairs- at the capital have been completed with the exception of putting down the new carpets in the hall of the House of Representatives. The hall has not been enlarged, but the desks for members have been changed for others much smaller, and henceforth there will be less room for graceful gestures on the part of the Hon. Mr. Buncombe. He will cither he com pelled to step into the aisle while relieving his pent up eloquence, or allow his ges tures, like maivy applauses, to be imagined by his enraptured and spell-bound au dience. It has been urged that Farmers' Granges are responsible for the recent f'nancial troubles East. If this is so, then .may the farming community see their power.. Their jletermination to right some of the outrages surrounding them from usurping monopolists in the Great "West, was certainly only a matter of self protection, and if their influence spreads to such extent as to cause such a flutter among bogus concerns as in this case God speed them in it, we say. The opera tion shows the cMss of securities guaran teeing them absolution from the evils com plained of to have hern very flimsy ex cuses ior legitimate business transactions. A "Washington dispatch says that only ahout fifty thousand volumes of pub lic documents belonging to Senators re main at the Capitol. On the House side immense piles of public documents be longing to members are stowed away, and j-ome disposition will have to be made of them. Afore than one-half of the mem bers of the last House were not re-elected, and those show no disposition to bear the expense of postag in forwarding the doc uments to their constituents A re-elected member who. was sending off documents s-aid he had alread' expended one hundred dollars in postage, which was rather a bit ter pill. "We hope they may all get a good dose of the bitter pills until they re peal that odious clause of the law which compels people to pay postage on news papers published in- the counties where there are neither postal routes nor post offiees as in Clatsop. . SUNDAY READING. The love of God and the world are two different things. If the love of this world dwell in thee, the love of God forsakes thee; renounce that and receive this; it is fit the nobler love should have the best place and ac ceptance. There are but three things that make the integrity of Christian faith: believing the words of God, confi- deifce in His goodness, and keeping His commandments. Jeremy Tay lor. We ought to have been the salt of the earth, but there has been little savor of Christ about us. We ought to have been the light of the world, but we have most of us been little glimmering sparks that could scarce ly be seen. We ought to have been a peculiar people, but the difference between us and the world has been faint and small. We ought to have looked on this world as an inn, and we have settled down in it as if it were our home, it ought to have been counted our school of training for eternity, and we have been at ease in it as if it were our continuing city, or trifled away time in it, as if we were meant to play and not to learn. We ought to have been care ful for nothing, we have been care ful and troubled about many things, we have allowed the affairs of this life to eat out the heart of our spirit uality, and have been cumbered with much serving. Pyle. Gentleness is love in society. It is love holding intercourse with those around it. It is that cordiality of aspect, and that soul of speech which assure us that kind and earnest hearts may still be met with here below. It is that quiet influence which, like the scented flame of an alabaster lamp, fills many a home with light, and warmth, and fragrance alto gether. It is the carpet soft and deep, which, whilst it diffuses a look of ample comfort, deadens many a creaking sound. It wards off at once the summer's slow and winter's wind. It is the pillow on which sickness lays its head and forgets half its misery, and to which death comes in a. balmier dream. It is consider ateness. It is tenderness of feeling. It is warmth of affection. It is promptitude of sjTmpathy. It is love in all its depths, and all its delicacy. It is everything included in that matchless grace, the gentleness of Christ. The majority of Frenchmen, if not actually disciples of Voltaire, are at least opposed to the clergy. No bish op in France has held power since the Revolution. Even the conserva tive peasantry do not like the priestly meddling in politics. The immense free-thinking class omit no opportu nity to assert anti-clerical feeling. "No priest at birth, no priest at mar riage, no priest at death,"is their war-cry. Funerals especially are made an occasion of showing con tempt for religion as it exists under priestly administration. The radi cal citv of Lyons has an association whose object is to make funerals an occasion 'of anti-clerical demonstra tion. Their energy in the matter has roused conservative rage, and the Prefect has made an order that all such funerals shall take place at six j in t3ie morning in summer, and seven in the morning m winter. The As sembly has voted approval of this order. The "Washington territory Legis lature may find it necessary to enact a law preventing hereditary thieves from plundering government land of valuable timber along the Sound, which is said to be done with impu nity the fellows actually claiming that Uncle Sam. has given them the land. A decree of August 29th, lSt3, ex empts from discriminating and customs duties all Grain and Flour imported into France y land or by French and foreign vessels. The law qf January 30, 1S72, which imposed the above duty, has been repealed. Minnie Myrtle Miller is in San Fran cisco. She says Joaquin is reported en gaged to marry some English lady, to w.hich she does not feel like urging .any objections on her own part, " . The general election in this State for member of Congress, will be held on iilon daynext. Yellow Fever still continues its rava ges at Shreveport, La., and at Alemphis, with no signs of abatement. The American prisoners were arrang ed at Fort Garry, on the 17th. IVEerriman was discharged; J3ently, Hoy and Ivegan pleaded guilty, and were sentenced to twenty four hours confinement. After ward the Judge banqueted the prisoners. New School Books.
