P3 Tri-Weekly Astorian ASTOKIA, OREGON: 1). C. IKEtAXI Editor. SATURDAY... Oct. 4, 1873 HOW TO XAKE GOOISCIIOOJLS. Charity it is said begins at home; " education certainly does, and to so much purpose that Ave had almost .said it begins at home and ends there. The foundation of education is laid before the pupil is sent to school, and upon this fundamental underly ing education we must build what ever of edifice the foundation will support. Hence the success of a school de pends as much upon the people of the district, if not more, than upon the teacher. The common opinion that a good teacher can make a good school, without the favor of the pa rents, is false and absurd. We do not ask parents to carry on the schools; they will be doing a good part to see that their children are in the schools, that their attendance is regular, and that their deportment out of school hours is correct. Pa rents should never form their opin ions of a school from the whims and conceits of their children; for when a pupil once gets the idea that he controls the " home sentiment," and that, if he is punished, he can create much trouble, he must be of an an gelic nature, or the school must be u miserable simulacrum, if he and it do not come into collision. Parents should not be in hast.) to believe the idle and senseless rumors too often set afloat by some disaffect ed party, and retailed from store and shop by idle gossippers to the discred it of the teacher and the school. Teachers are liable, we suppose, in common with the rest of mankind, to make mistakes, but it is no less true that those who make the most fuss about schools, and are loudest in their complaints of teachers know least about them, and are most unlit to judge. Should any cause of com plaint arise proceed calmly and ra tionally. Go to the teacher, with kindness in your heart, with an ex pression of good will upon your coun tenance and make known your griev ance to him alone. By such a course all difficulties will be removed, and perfect harmony restored in almost every instance. But, if you go in auger, remember "that the coldest bodies warm with opposition, the hardest sparkle in collision" and "you will have to digest the venom of your spleen though it do split you." If children are governed but little, r not at all at homej, if the author ity of the teacher is denied, sneered at, or ridiculed; if his rules, conduct and general administration are un dervalued and disparaged, he will be no common man if he succeeds. Children feel, think, and act, as their parents do. The teacher, the rules, the books, the studies, the lessons, the punishments, must be sanction ed at home, or it is utterly impossi ble to Sustain and elevate a school. It is better to help than to hinder a .teacher, better to praise than to blame, but if assistance and com mendation can not, conscientiously, be rendered, avoid expressing unfav orable opinions, in the presence of pupils. Money is never spent more wisely than for education. Almost all moneys raised by towns, tre paid for present gratification, use or con venience. And in the result are nothing enduring, nothing perma nent. The repair made upon the highway this year will be washed away by the rains of heaven, and a renewal will be required next year. The wooden bridge that spans the s ea .i to-day begins to decay to morrow, and it is only a question of time how soon another perishable .structure must take its place. But education is a growing force, it reaches far into the future, it takes hold on immortality. On the high peaks of this generation shall rest . the plane from which thenext shall -start. Men 'die, nations perish, and aretforgottpn, but theducational. ef forts of all men and'b alUtiiries.are embodied in the race. THE EDITH REJECTED. "We ,are informed that the bark City of Paris has been substituted for the ship Edith to come to Portland under charter to load with wheat for Europe. As we understand the mat ter, the Edith is rejected because she was too large to go up to Portland to load, and this brings the subject right to the point. "Will Oregon producers long continue to submit to shipments of half and three-quarter cargoes of their grain in the trade with Europe, placing such differences" between their chances and that of the Cali fornia producer, so long as they stand upon a footing in the way of natural commercial advantages? The rejection of the Edith, and the substitution of the City of Paris, will not materially aid the case, eith er, if we take the Privateer, "Winde mere, and "Wetterhorn as samples of the economy of engaging light draft vessels for the Oregon grain trade. All of these, by delays, and extra expenses of lighterage, have had to pay more for getting their cargoes to Astoria than should have been neces sary had the wheat come down the natural way. We will take the Lieut. Maury, for example, to show that the most favorable phase of the question is against sending ocean ves sels to Portland. The Ma.ny took away G1SI tons 20,411 busnels. Her demurrage, cost of pilotage, towage, and extra charges of having to enter at two ports when one at Astoria was sufficient, as footed up show a cost of about ten cents a bushel for bring ing her 61S tons to Astoria in the ship's hold. "We presume it will cost the City of Paris just as much, or more, when the farmer himself ought to be able to have the work done with the present facilities for less than half that sum. The rejec tion of such vessels as the Edith for such reasons, is disgraceful to Oregon, where there is a seaport second to one only in the United States, and a river with greater depth at its mouth than any other in the world, open ing upon an Ocean, excepting the Amazon. 1VESTPOKT XEWS. Our occasional correspondent at Westport contributes the following, under date of September 29th: Mr. Plimpton is about ready for pile driving, for a new wharf to be built at his place adjoining "Westport. Capt. John West & Co. are prepar ing for wharf building adjoining their present dock. Mr. Scott Sampson caught seventy five trout last Sunday in "Westport creek, some of them were over twelve inches long, and others would weigh over a pound a piece. Mr. Marshall Morgan, brought down at the first shot, a fine fat deer on Sunday, on the Island opposite Westport. Mr. David West, andW. C. Stevens made the trip from Astoria to West port in five .hours, in a small boat, on Sunday. It is thought they must have had a good head of steam on. There are a few stray Cougars in this vicinity, and as the people here are strictly honest, say they have lost none any person hankering af ter that kind of meat, might get away with two or three, on the sly. Fishermen are already making ' preparations for Salmon fishing the coming season, knitting nets, having boats built, etc. In fact every one here is busy happiness and content ment reign supreme, and smiles light every phisiog. The sound of the hammer and the saw, and the shrill whistle of the Jane West, makes a person sternly realize that there is something solid at the bottom. Yours, etc., T. D. It appears that the assassin of Gen. MeCook at Yankton last month was Charley Winterinute, formerly of St. Paul Minnesota. The trouble grew out of the appointment of an United States Marshall for Dakota, I "Wintermute and MeCook both hav Mng favorites for the place. Politics b u.ueugu&uu imsuiess.
