C41 W"Jg3gwgreggW'feggg Tri-Weekly Astorian SATURDAY Sept. 27, 1873 THE JDREA3T. Low burned the fire; the room was dim; "We heard the warning clock strike ten, And bj'the moonlight, growing grim, Knew parting-time had come again. " I had a dream last night," I said: 11 I'll tell it to you, ere I go, 1 thought, my dear, your little head "Was lying on my shoulder so! f 'Tis time to go,5 I said; and you You kissed me twice upon my cheek; JSow tell -me, love, if dreams come true?" Xost archly did my darling speak: . " Why, some come true, and some do not, fin dreams like this I quite believe." And then she kissed me twice; and got Her waist encircled by my sleeve. "Why is it that to say good night Must take so long a time? I know, "When lips are sweet and eyes are bright, ;Tis very hard, indeed, to go. But, somehow, ere I went away That night, the clock had struck eleven; .So long, you see, it takes, to say yhat seemed an easy task at seven. :?JdSCBIXAXEUS ITEMS. - The government docks at Fort Vancouver are being reconstructed under contract by Messrs Smith and Nicholas Clinton. If any one 5s desirous of keejasg their rose-bushes free from the small, geen vermin, the following remedy will be found a mosb effectual ene: To three gallons of soft water add one peck of soot and one quart of unslack ed lime; stir it well, let it stand for twenty-four hours, and when the soot rises to the surface, skim it off. Use a syringe for applying it. After a ham has been well cured by pickle and smoke, take some clean ashes from bits of coal; moisten them with a little water so that they will form a paste, or else just wet the hams a little, and rub on the dry ashes. Rubbed in thoroughly they serve as a capital insect protector, and the hams can be hung up in the somke-house or wood-chamber with out any danger of molestation, A very pretty little story has been dieted by the death of Hiram Powers, and is enjoying a wide cur rency. It is about the daughter of au American gentleman, who had been possessed of great wealth, but who was suddenly reduced to pover ty. "When this calamity overtook them, father and daughter sought refuge in Florence. There the latter to procure the means of subsistence for her father, co :sented to become a model for Iliram Powers, and her lovely form was reproduced in mar ble, to be famous forever as "The Greek Slave." He is a Vandal who would destroy such a romance; but there is a curious fact which may be mentioned in this connection; it is the opinion of the best medical au thority that the model for "The Greek Slave" had been, supposably a wifex and certainly a mother. Recently the dead body of a man was found among the sand hills near San Francisco, concmiin" whom there is an unwritten history full of pathos, Iii his pockets were three dollars in paper money, a paper marked .strychnine, and on the grouh'd near him was a letter, inform ing him that his father was very ill and fast sinking. A part of the let ter was written by his mother, in which she stated that she was sick, failing, weary of life, and that she "had but one desire to see her son. ;The remainder of the letter was writ ten by his sister, in which she im plored her brother to hasten to his former home in Yarmouth, New Hampshire, if -he ever expected to see either tf his parents again. But the letter reached a man too poor to make the' long journey,. Years ago he came to the land of gold, but he had not succeeded -in gaining wealth, ' or oven lining' up suificieHt money to take .him honste.'-Sohen the sad ; letter reached liitn, in a fit' of despair, 1 1 Ike rord to tcroi 4hdtte: titer?
