My-dbarr old friend. Samuel Corwin I have no doubt but you -will bo much surprised on receiving this lottor, but, perhaps, not more so, or. more gratified,, than I was to boar from soui. So many incidonts of the past, in which you andil were connected crowd, upon any mind that I cannot think or write of "myself. Does vour mind over revert to the past, when wo "first met how you took mo in as a partnor, when those who ought to have been my best friends throw off on mo how wo got snowed in and had to live on potatoes straight for six weeks how good that grSzzloy moat tasted what a disgraceful retreat wo made from our poor inriocont Jack, when wo thought wo wero besioged by a grizzley. "Well, bam, thoso events of IS 52 fro-iuontly furnish subject niat f r.i nv thmrhti. nnil. as I am writimr to you, crowd upon my mind, but I will dismiss j rjiem for the present to grvo piace to tnat wuiuu will, perhaps, lo of greater interest to you. While in Franco I was taken with tho ?mall-pox. Tho lady of the inn tolAl mo that 1 was fortunate to take tho disease at that place. thcro was an old small-pox doctor near by who never failed to cure, no matter how bad th 9 disease; and suro enough, I began to re cover within four hours after commencing to take the medicine, and in twenty-four hours 1 "felt quite well. I was so much elated with tho magical effects of tho medicmo that I was determined, if possible, to obtain tho formula, iu which I succoeded, by paying handsomoly and promising not to divulge it in France. I see from Oregon papers that you havo tho discaao among you. Tho enclosed packago contains tho formula and sufficient material for family uso.
