Come to the Fouxtain. One of the most at
tractive establishments in Portland is tl
drug and perfumery stQre of our old friend
Samuel M. Smith, corner of Ash and First
streets. Mr. Smith was for many years senior
partner of the firm of Smith- & Davis. And, J
bolides being a thoroughly practical druggist
and chemist is,-withal, "as genial a gentleman
as ever grasped hand in friendship. His
store is fitted up and stocked in a magnificent
manner with everything usually found in a
complete stock of drugs, chemicals, porfum
ories, etc, But the feature- par excellence if
the soda fountain, one of the famous Arctic
patent-, an immense affair, a monument reared
in marble and silver to the health of the
thirsty. It has deliveries, on opposite sidles,
and.can accommodate a rush. It is stocked
with Kissengen, Congress, Vichy, Seltzer and
different kimds of syrup3. The cooling appar
atus is the most perfect in use, and tho pro
duct of that fountain a draught that surpasses
"the ne&tar of the gods."
To Investorsr-The Northern Pacific
Railroad-Company has now built, equipped
and put in operation, nearly 517 miles of its
main lino of road through an excellent coun
try and along what is known as the Valley
Route to the.Pacific The finished portions
v already enjoy a largo and fast increasing
traffic; The-seetibns approaching- completion
connect the chain of Lakes with the navigation
of tho Upper Missouri and Columbia rivers
with Puget Sound, secure at once a largo and
profitable businessand entitle the Company
to about iu,5W,uw acres- or excellent average
land in foe simple.
With these accomplished results, tho Com
pany offers; and is now rapidly selling, its
Hrsfr Morgago Bonds, for. completing tho
construction and equipment of its road across
tho Continent. After careful investigation,
wo recommend. these bonds as a well secured
and unusually profitable investment. They
have 30 years to run; principal and interest
are payable in gold; the interest (seven and
throe-tenths per cent.) is equal now to about
SK per cent in currency. Tho coupon and
registered bonds can bo exchanged for each
otlior, at the pleasure of the holder. Gold
checks for tho semiannual interest on the
registered bonds are mailed to the post office
addross of the owner.. .
i'hese securities haro the following elements
of strongth and safety: They aro the obliga
tion of a strong corporation; they aro also a
mortgage on the Road, its right of way, equip
ments and franchises, and a first lean on its
not earnings. In addition to this usually suf
ficient security, there ispledgodfor tho pay
niont of tho principal and interest a Grant of
Land, averaging about 23,000 Acres por Mile
for the entire length of tho Road. At tho
average price por aero at which other Land
(Grants have thus far been sold, thi3realestato
security will yield more than S101.000 per
mjlomore than three times the possible is
sue of bonds. , ,
Tho Company has already begun the pro
cess of redeeming and cancelling its first mort
gage bonds, as they are now being received,
