Tri-Weekly Astorian
TUESDAY. August 19, 1873
BEREFT.
From Manuscript of 1S50.
To-day they laid her in the tomh,
And I am left alone;
And hitting in her silent room.
I hear the wild winds moan.
They shriek and rave above her grave,
Like ocean wave, by tempest tossed;
They shriek their woe, they drift the snow
Above my loved and lott.
And must I tread the path alone,
The dreary path of life?
So one to cheer my faltering steps,
Bereft of thee, sweet wife.
Ah J through tho gloom of this lone room
I hear the winds moan above her bed.
They shriek and blow, they drift tho snow
Above my darling's. head.
It cannot bo; come back, come back!
I cannot live alone;
This earth is but a dreary waste
"With thy loved presence gone.
Still the winds moan with solemn tone
Alone! alone! the sad tears start.
The wild winds blow, they drift the snow
Above my dear one's heart.
