L4J Tri-Weekly Astorian SATURDAY ...August 9, 1873 Bathing at Long Branch A correspondent of New York Gra phic has this: "Woman can invest even a red flan nel bathing dress with some degree of picturesqueness, but man is totally and uncompromisingly hideous from the moment he emerges, sheepish and awkward from the bathing house door, until he recrosses the threshold, sand-encrusted, and with seaweed sticking out from his con gealed toe. The West-enders em brace Father Neptune with most re freshing decorum. They wear oil silk caps surrounded by the usual straw monstrosities, and stockings. Yes, stockings; and they are as much prettier than bare feet notwithstan ding the "almond pink nails" of which Private Miles hath sung as, well, as false teeth are than real ones. Seriously, though, imagine a reine du ballet without her silk stockings. The "West-end belles, then come down to bathe in blue and white dresses,, coquettishly made and fitting to perfection, of a decorous length,' and beneath, a bewitching pair of striped stockings. They possessed the- artistic perception necessary to enable them to dispense with (hor rors!) a pair of sandals, and cape stepping on the sands looking like nymphs.of Diana, buskined for the chase. It was, doubtless, very rude in the. waves to buffet such trim little models of beauty and decorum, and knock off their sunhats and beat their hah-across their eyes and fill their ears with, bits of floating straw; but they did it,, and seemed to like it, t. But. for a genuine Neptunian frolic, the French and German denizens of Iauch' s- bear off the palm . Thi s tem ple of souffiees and ice-cream, than which no hotel on Ocean avenue can furnish a more enticing luncheon, turns out every day scores of dark eyed olive-skinned demoi-selles for a bath royal with the waves. These Gallic water-nymphs are so pretty in their short-sleeved waists and Zouave pants, ending at the knee with a co quettish ruffle, and those indiscrib able little caps which are at once so veritably French that one wonders why Yankee ingenuity has never in vented some way in which a woman may look as enchanting in the salt water as she does in the ball-room or an opera box. The Flora McFlim seys, who sit under umbrellas on the sands, their hands encased in thick, undressed kids, and heads swathed in two yards or more of grenadine veil, gaze with feeble astonishment at the twinkling heels of these jolly French girls disappearing behind some huge breaker. The influence of nature and health and beauty are so lost on them that one wonders why they didn't stay at Madison square, hoist an umbrella in the bath-room, turn on the water in the tub, and gaze across its noble expanse in lieu of the dancing, blue Atlantic After all,, the children have a bet ter time-at Long Branch than any body else They tumble up and down the bluff, play horse-cars on the shore bury their toes in the sand,, and catch fiddler-crabs- Sometimes tSe crabs revenge themselves. "When Moster Bobby's nurse, who with the placid indifference to his welfare that characterizes her kind, has left him to kill time on scientific principles of his own, hears a howl of anguish em anating from the plaited bosom of his white pique, she knows what that howl portends,, and rushes to- extri cate the toe of her precious (Z) charge from the grasp of a rapacious crab.
