If you want-to know whether a tree is hollow or not, ax it. It is said the world owes every man a living, but a great many men are too lazy to collect it. ' A Persian saying is, that-ten meas ures of talk were sent upon earth, and woman took nine of them. What is the difference between a Jew and a lawver? The one gets his law from the prophet, the other his profit from the law. A doctor went out for a day's sport, and complained of having killed no thing. ''That's the consequence of having neglected your business," ob served his wife. The Banbury News man has re turned and mentions this incident: "A round shouldered and inqisitive stranger- kicked an ornamental dog on a Nelsonstreet stoop to see if it was solid or- hollow. It was not an ornamental dog, however, but one (faat was there on business, and the tOJfPii shouldered and inquisitive !rringor is now quarantined with an SinntOfl. Delay street." The- musk&to is intensely relig ious," said Sparques to his spouse. IIow so?" sle inquired., "Because && :, preying al the- time," said puTq.u-es.. ' Mrs,. Sparques smiled at isr husband's joke. but immediately jafcf:- "Musketos are not religious." "Why?" asked Sparques. li Because they present their bills on Sundays." Sparques went out for a walk, and for meditation. A negro minister who married rather sooner after the death of his wife than some of the sisters thought .proper and becoming, excused him self as follews: "My dear brethren and sisters, my grief was greater than I could bear., I turned every way for peace-and comfort but none came. I searched the scriptures from (prini see to Riverlations. and found plenty of promises to the widder, but nary one to-tbe-widderer., And so I took it that t-h,e- good Lord didn't waste sympathy on a man when it was in his power to comfort himself; and having a frrst rate chance to- marry in the Lord I did so, and would do so again. Besides,, brethren, I consid ered that poor Patsy was just as dead as she would be." Pretty bright negro that. There is reason in liis philosophy. One morning, not long since, a West Side man rose from breakfast, and discovered as he stepped out of doors, to go to his place of business, that it was raininjr. Turning to the wife of his bosom, he inquired where the family umbrella could be found. In a somewhat embarassed manner, she replied that she had loaned it to her sister the night before, and it not had been returned. In not the best humor, the. husband muffled himself up as best he could, and trudged off down town through the rain. The next scene opens with the wife sending her nine year old son to a man not her " sister" with a note requesting him to immediate ly return the umbrella she had loan ed him the night before, while he was making a very late call before her husband had returned from business that had detained him till midnight. Third scene is where the blunder ine boy, instead of bringing the tell tale umbrella home, as he had been specially enjoined, takes it to the place of business of his parential an cestor, and on being questioned, tells where ho got it. A first-class row followed and, the husband thinks his wife was more careful of the other fellow than of him, which the same isn't right. Iowa Paper. ASTORIA MARKETS. Astoria OrTi n, August 0.
